I only heard this today from people in my class and I thought it's weird... how could an african man had sex with a monkey and contracted the virus? O.o

    There's a wiki for that

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIDS_origin

TL : DR Bushmeat practice as the most plausible cause
According to the natural transfer theory (also called 'Hunter Theory' or 'Bushmeat Theory'), the "simplest and most plausible explanation for the cross-species transmission"[7] of SIV or HIV (post mutation), the virus was transmitted from an ape or monkey to a human when a hunter or bushmeat vendor/handler was bitten or cut while hunting or butchering the animal. The resulting exposure to blood or other bodily fluids of the animal can result in SIV infection

Yes, humans can contract diseases from animals and the reverse is true too. It's called Zoonosis. As far as how we first became infected with HIV, I'm not educated enough to know the answer to that.

AMoonHawk saidIt's not about them having sex with a monkey, silly. In Africa, they hunt and kill monkeys, some for food, so for souvenir parts and some for voodoo spells. From what I remember of this story, there is a monkey in Africa that has this virus, but the monkey are immune to the virus. Africans hack of the hands and feet of this monkey for voodoo spells, so it is theorized that blood from the monkey got into a mans wound and infected him.

Not so fast. The Wiki article I just read says: "The resulting exposure to blood or other bodily fluids of the animal can result in SIV infection", which means it could have happened the way you suggest OR sexual contact. Of course the latter possibility will be suppressed because it's not politically correct. In the end, we have no way of knowing exactly how we first contracted SIV, but apparently ANY contact with blood or other bodily fluids could have done the trick. What they don't understand yet is how SIV gets converted to HIV once in the human's system.

I always believed it was a man made disease. Originally created to kill off Africans and Gays. I don't remember the theory exactly, but something to do with thousands of gay men being used as lab rats for Hepatitis B vaccines in Manhattan in the 70s, which then lead tostud first real spread of HIV in the US.

The sex with a monkey theory doesnt add up, I'm sure people have had sex with monkeys way back in time- WAAAY before the 1960s.

Hmm...possibly the same way as SV40, also a simian virus. The polio vaccine made with monkey kidneys, is a possibility.

    Here:
    http://www.bmartin.cc/pubs/94tld.html

The article notes that transmission via bestiality, or a bite, or exposure to monkey blood with an open wound was possible for many thousands of years, so why did people fall ill only recently in all that time?

    -Doug

"An explanation along these lines is the standard view on the origin of AIDS. But there is one obvious question. Why did AIDS develop in the 1950s? A cut hunter or monkey bite could have occurred any time in the past thousands of years. The usual explanation is that urbanization and travel led to the wider spread of AIDS beginning in the 1950s.

There is, though, another theory available, that explains both the transmission and the timing: polio vaccination campaigns in central Africa in the late 1950s. This theory is simple and obvious. Polio vaccines are cultured on monkey kidneys. Many of the monkeys would have been carrying SIVs, and many of them would have shown no symptoms and thus not been rejected as ill. Thus it would not be too difficult for some batches of vaccine to be contaminated with SIVs. Since the SIVs were not discovered until 1985, there was no way to screen for them in the 1950s.

There is even a precedent for monkey-human viral transmission. In the early 1960s, some polio vaccines were found to be contaminated with a simian virus named SV40. This caused great concern at the time, since SV40 had been given to tens of millions of people in the United States and elsewhere. Henceforth, steps were taken to screen all vaccines for SV40 and other such viruses. (The health consequences of SV40 in humans is a separate issue that deserves study.)"

Thats actually AIDS. And it was way before the 1970's.
    But still good info.

You're right. I should of refreshed my memory.

But seriously, there was so much fault to go around for the AIDS epidemic that we don't need to rely on that tired old conspiracy theory. No one in power took it seriously because it was just the gays. Read this:

    NO!
Apes have the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus. Hunters would eat meat from these animals and eventually SIV mutated into HIV. It was spread around Southern Africa by unsafe vaccinations. Then it got to Kinshasa in the DRC, where it became common amongst sex workers.
And in starting in the 1950s it spread all over the world.
Someone from brought it from DRC to Haiti and then into the USA.
