Not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, the guy probably screwed up a lot of people, even indirectly responsible for some suicides? who knows. Why didn't he recant/clarify during his career? Only now, late in life while suffering Parkinson's, it makes his motivation seem more conscience clearing than record setting.

It kind of seems like the guy used us to further his career. Early on, he took the radical approach of saying our orientation is not the product of a personality disorder. Good for us. But also the move was good for him because that probably gave his career a nice push. Later he came out with this shit which put him back into the limelight, not so good for us. And now his apology so we all feel sorry for him? Well, good for him. I don't know that we've anything to gain by it.

Cry of wolf? Sorry, I don't think I can buy it. And even if I did, it's been cheapened, because apologies lose value the longer they are withheld.

hmmm I never looked at it that way at all, but I definately see what you guys are saying. I just found it cool that this guy came out and said that his practices were fucked up and that he knows he prolly ruined lives. It just seems like gay acceptance has moved so fuckin quickly in the last 4 years....long way to go tho :/

It's amazing to see how fast gay civil rights movement is moving, i can actually visualise a day where it would be totally dumb or against public morality to say anything anti-gay, kinda like interracial marriages or woman's rights

Maybe in Canada. Down here it's gotten respectable to hate on women's rights again. In some quarters, anyway.

haha actually in Canada even the extreme conservative (a mayor of toronto) showed up unannounced and did a pride flag raising ceremony when he avoided every gay event in the past and even had a speech against homophobia which was a complete shock and surprise few days ago.

Truthfully he probably knew all along, as well as other "doctor's" performing these tests and saying it was a mental disorder. It all comes down to personal opinion and feelings towards our sexual preference, they didn't like it so they used their Phd's to start Nazi like experiments. All I can say is he has Parkinson's and that karma is a biotch. Ciao!

He came?! I was just reading about that actually, he was going to go to a family cabin or something which is somewhat a tradition in his family. I was annoyed, that just made me happy and want to be in Canada again. Although, I'm waiting to see what Obama does if and when he is re-elected. *fingers crossed* icon_biggrin.gif

The last 4 years has been awesome for us but as you said we have such a LONG way to go. I would say we have made great progress when gay marriage is legal in all 50 states, gay adoption is legal and accepted in all 50 states, the gay teen suicide rates go way down, and being called gay is not used as an insult. I probably wont see all of this in my lifetime but home my one year old niece will see it in her lifetime hopefully.

As for the psychologist, I am conflicted too about the guy. In a way I am happy he finally did what is right but like others have said how many gay people did he fuck up before he took back his bogus "work".

I myself am a feminist when feminisem supports gender equality for both sexus, and not just extra rights.

amoonhawkI think I might believe he really was sincere if he would go get a lobotomy to prove just how sorry he really is.

As he didn't practice lobotomy and successfully campaigned to have being gay removed as a full disorder, that would be a bit extreme, wouldn't it?

Also, maybe only if you are experiencing gay rights from a 25-year-old's point of view but not if you've lived the last 25 or more adult years without them.

It would be like taking the New York to California stage coach, hopping on in Nevada and declaring as the coach finally enters the station: "Oh my, that was a fast and easy trip" while the rest of the passengers on board for the long haul look at you like you're fuckin' nuts.

I'm surprised he could tear himself away from the buffet long enough to do it.

No, that would be the local KFC.icon_twisted.gif
