YAY! I'm finally losing weight! It's all about testosterone

I gained 20 pounds during my prostate cancer treatment, which I was told to expect, due to Lupron injections that suppressed my testosterone. I was in effect being temporarilly castrated chemically, and developed a eunuch's build. Not to mention the first drop in libido in my life. icon_sad.gif

But finally I said enough. One doctor contended I had to continue the injections, another disagreed, following the completion of my radiation treatments. I chose to stop the shots.

A few months later after my last shot my strength and stamina are returning. And I'm losing the weight, down 14 pounds this month alone. I finally feel I can resume doing long rides on my bike. Sex is returning, too. icon_biggrin.gif

And even my golf instructor told me yesterday that I looked much slimmer. I already knew that, my fat pants are suddenly loose.

Lesson for others here: testosterone is really important to men. As you get older it naturally drops, or in my case was suppressed for a medical reason. Have it checked regularly as you age, since there are supplement options a doctor can prescribe.

Read my post again. My radiation oncologist OK'ed my suspending the Lupron injections, and overruled my urologist. This thread is about what I've learned regarding the importance of testosterone to male health, not about your sick obsession with stalking me.

And you're referring to other earlier disputes I had with my doctors that go back to Fall 2011. You just joined in May 2012. So what sock puppet are you? Dean_Aane, perhaps?

mmm....I can kinda see flaming a guy who's posting irrelevant off-topic manifestos in other people's threads. But when he's posting what may be new information on a topic (for some) in a succinct, new thread, with a meaningful subject, in the right forum (weight loss)....what's the problem here? Surely you've badgered enough in the other thread, no? icon_wink.gif

I just don't like how he is so proud of putting a stop to his doctor's order.

I followed one doctors's advice, and disregarded another's. And who the fuck are you to like or dislike what I do about my own health?

This topic concerns the importance of testosterone to men, and what I learned during my cancer treatment. Your obsession with disrupting my threads is rather disturbing.

I return to the topic I posed, that testosterone levels are vital to male health, and need to be monitored, especially as we age. Low testosterone leads to reduced energy, muscle loss, bone loss, lowered libido, weight gain, and other debilitating effects.

I had gained like 25 lbs. Lost most of my body hair and muscle tone...and i am told bone mass. My dr wouldnt let me start weight lifting at normal weights until the bones had had a chance to recover. So I can understand AD's situation.

I had to stop my injections (time-release Zoladex capsules injected in my abdomen) because I couldnt take the depression after 9 months.

I consulted my dr before making my decision. But I made the decision. I couldnt endure the depression any longer. I would rather have died. (I just learned i was probably stage IV when I started.)

I'm 5 years out with no rise in PSA (0.014 last week). So my cancer dr has given me a clean bill of health.

Good luck with your recovery, AD. Eat your broccoli.

tuckers_kahuna saidTestosterone has been the key to me getting my life and my body on track. I lost close to 100 pounds after I was diagnosed and treated for a hormone disorder that included extremely low testosterone (I had less testosterone than a normal woman has!). Of course, I worked really hard to lose the weight but it was the testosterone that facilitated it. I have gained almost 40 pounds of muscle since then, and I am on a very strong course of testosterone replacement therapy. I absolutely love the stuff.

Glad to hear that you have been helped so much. Naturally I don't recommend any kind of hormone treatment without the approval & supervision of a doctor. At my age (60s) my primary doctor was already including a testosterone check as part of my regular blood work, and that's when we found mine was low. Unfortunately the topical gels like Testim didn't help me.

But then my prostate cancer was discovered, and as part of my treatment I was given Lupron injections (some in my stomach - icon_razz.gif ) to purposely suppress my testosterone, since the male hormone accelerates this kind of cancer. My oncologist now thinks the cancer is under control with radiation therapy, and has agreed to suspend the shots.

Which he did at my request, because the sudden virtual elimination of testosterone from my body, which was already low, was horrible. I effectively went into menopause, with hot flashes and sweats, for which I still carry a folding fan with me. Plus the weakness and weight gain I've already mentioned, and complete loss of libido. I began to look like the classic eunuch, being chemically castrated for a time, fat pudgy face and big belly.

And so my message to other guys here, especially the older ones, is to make sure your doc includes a testosterone test with your blood work during your physicals (and have them at least annually). If it's low there are therapies that some men respond to. The negative consequences of abnormally low testosterone in a male are really quite profound.

Their common tactic is to deliberately misstate & misrepresent something someone says, and then criticize them for it. I clearly said I was following one doctor's advice (not an "order"), instead of another's. When there is conflicting guidance one must make a choice.

As for the mean girls, as TropicalMark & I have deduced, this one isn't new at all, just a sock puppet for an old friend here. He joined RJ 2 weeks ago but knows my online past here in great detail. And identical in behavior to a member who is seriously obsessed with distorting & criticizing my course of cancer treatment, as well as being fixated about mocking my former military rank. These guys usually aren't very clever, just in their own minds.

Prostate cancer treatment is no walk in the park. It really fucks you up. It is understandable that AD is happy to see his body getting back to normal. That's not the same as being proud of stopping a dr's order.

Prostate cancer feeds on testosterone. The treatment blocks the production of testosterone to starve the cells and hopefully they die. So he had one dr that said he had had enough and another saying there could be cancer cells lying dormant and will come back to life when your testosterone levels rise. So in fact AD has taken a risk. Now only time will tell which dr was right. I took the same risk when my treatment became unbearable. I am lucky. All is well. Let's wish AD the same luck. There is no second bite at the apple.

Why dont you just let him be during his struggle with his cancer treatment. It is very hard. Let him express his feelings. If you cant give polite encouragement, then just pass him over in silence. It's very hard to deal with this both physically and mentally.

His long posts that people like to deride are prolly a manifestation of his treatment. Mine manifested itself in LOLcats. Lots of LOLcats. icon_wink.gif

Congratulations Bob! And thanks for the tip Bob & TK. Been thinking about the replacement therapy myself.

Note to other posters: it is absolutely ridiculous that in a thread about someone making progress, politics have to be inserted where none were even suggested by the OP. And if disagreeing with a physician makes you a bad person, color me guilty. If I know something the doc is telling doesn't work for me and he still insists, I am going for another opinion. There is nothing wrong with that. It is about getting as much info as you can to make the best decision for yourself for that particular issue. Nothing wrong that either.

Hi Erik! Haven't seen you post in quite a while.

If you have low testosterone, discuss your options with a doctor. My previous use of topical gels, before I got cancer and had to be taken in the opposite direction with hormone suppression, was not successful. My hormone level barely went up. But every man is different, so give it a try if prescribed for you.

But other members figured out who you are, and e-mailed me about it (and see a post above), and it wasn't southbeach they named.

oh I just had this memory from when I was being treated.

People would say "Oh that's curable." in quick. sort of glib way. I often couldnt tell if they were being glib to try to make me feel better, like it's a certainty, so dont worry. Or if they were dismissing the disease because they thought since it was curable, the cure was easy. The second interpretation was very offensive. Because it's curable, but the cure is nasty and brutish. It's not like take an aspirin and go about your business. It's very debilitating all by itself.
