Oddly enough, I heard it originated as part of prison culture...I'm sure I don't have to explain what it signifies...

it is from prison culture, they sometimes take the belt and shoelaces to keep them from being used as weapons or to hang oneself, so without a belt naturally the pants began to sag. I'm not sure of the jump from prison to mainstream style.

As my mother so aptly put it, "Good God! It looks like he has a lump of poop dragging his slacks down.".

I remember those days. I had a 32 inch waist wearing pants that were size 42-46. I looked like an idiot and walked like a moron. Thank God I have switched up my style to a more fitted look.

it's getto style - every subculture has a style
BUT they are aware that the are showing their BUTT to everybody. Not sure why they want to do that.

    Uh...

I like it! Anything featuring a nice rear is, IMHO, a welcome fashion innovation.

I just thought I'd be the first to say so.

This is a great report from the fussy old dandy of style from the NYT, Bill Cunningham.

I've never been convinced it's from prison culture, because having had friends in prison, as well as having done jail time myself, it's my impression that the prison would not likely allow the men to dress in such a sloppy manner if they could keep a handle on the men. That's not to say it's as straightlaced as the military, but in prison there is a certain amount of structure to the clothing codes. Of course, that doesn't explain how the punk bitches get away with being in half-drag some of the time. But I've had friends who've done prison time and said they never saw that. I think it's just a bunch of thug-wannabe's trying to act like they've been to prison in order to seem tough.
Also, back in the early-to-mid 1970's, when I was in high school, doing the same thing was very popular, especially if you had boxer shorts showing above the waistline with a fancy print on them. We called it "Low Riding" and most of the surfer and stoner guys, including me for a short time, did it. We thought it was a way of displaying a certain sexiness.
Until my mom, like an above poster, said to me, "Looks like you dropped a load in your pants before you could get to the toilet!"
That stopped me in my tracks. Never did it again, either.

Seems to be a strong majority voting here....I'm with them. It's trashy. No respect for yourself obviously....or others. We do not want to see your ass or underwear. Go hang out in the hood instead.

    Getto=ghetto.

Secondly...it's not "ghetto" subculture...it has become mainstream by means of mainstream hip hop. I say mainstream as in the flashy/commercialized hip hop...not the lyricist style of hip hop.

I find this fashion trend very perplexing, particularly when the underwear on display is old and dingy, or perhaps even dirty. If someone wanted to show off his underwear, wouldn't it make sense for him to wear something nice?

Sorry... I always have to be the devils advocate...ok so what about guys wearing tight jeans showing off their asses as well. Do they not have any sense of style or class as well?

Just because something is different than what you're accustomed to doesn't mean that it is necessarily something negative.

No I'm not pro-sagging or anything...I just can't stand when people judge another person's style as a basis of their own. It is what it is...simple as that.

...what's really funny is watching the droopy panted run. Their legs have a swing of about 12 inches, like those 60s girls in their tight skirts. Like people trying to run around in potato sacks. I have to stop, I'm making myself laugh.
    -Doug

PS the posts about them looking like they dropped a load made me howl so hard I almost dropped one!

Yeah the run is absolutely hilarious. And if they have a backpack or something the hilarity only intensifies. Lol.

I honestly can't see how these guys walk around all day without a belt. You have to walk with your legs EXTRA wide to keep the pants from falling beneath your knees.icon_confused.gif

Developing joint trouble in the long run would be a given if you dress in that manner on a regular basis.icon_rolleyes.gif

I like seeing them try to run! ( waddle* waddle* waddle*) icon_biggrin.gif

    Hilarious stuff...

This thread is begging for pictures. icon_smile.gif

Is sagging any worse than the alternative?
    sagging_pants3.jpg

As with any fashion trend, some can pull it off, some can't. I personally think the resulting walk is pretty comical, but I do find that shirtless sagging can be kinda hot. icon_redface.gif
