    Lolcats.

    Ok, really?

I found Icanhascheezburger.com a long time ago and I still do enjoy looking at it frequently. I've read the good word and love a good lolcat joke as good as any other, but the recent lolcat perversion across the forums is too much.

It's not so much that there are far too many lolcat jokes posted, but that they appear in nearly every topic, often without any sort of relevance to the topic on hand. Usually, it seems that if one finds one lolcat joke posted, they find free rein to post any other sort of lolcat picture, no matter what the joke may be . .

I've been around the Realjock forums for over a year and a half now, but it seems I'm not the only one who has noticed a decline in the quality of forum discussion. I'm pointing the finger at you guys--it's near impossible to start or continue legitimate conversation anymore with the overabundance of these. I'll be the devil's advocate: it's not funny anymore. It's something to be expected from the tweenagers at YTMND.com or SomethingAwful.com's forums, but please, not this.

Now I know that any attempt to open up a legitimate topic about this discussion won't fare too well, and that this thread will soon be populated with an assortment of lolcat pictures, half of which will be customized to fit the topic . .

May ceiling cat strike me down, but I had to say it. Don't jump the shark, Realjock!

Yeah but a year and a half ago RJ wasn't as popular as it is now, and with everything getting bigger it brings a whole different bunch of people into the mix. Not to mention words out that there are tones of hot guys on this site which brings the guys to come here to choke the chicken who've prolly never set foot in a gym.

I'd gladly trade the lolcats for the more frequent linguistic acrobatics and funnies of McGay, jprichva, ColmDublin, ObsceneWish and others who brightened the site with their constant witticisms and dry humor in days gone by. Coloring the forums with lolcats is like sweetening your coffee with Splenda...it's novel for a while, but quickly gets cloying and doesn't quite compare to the real thing. icon_cool.gif

Edit: I added a smiley because this post makes me sound mean and grumpy, which I swear I'm not today!

Well I am on the fence about this. I am usually on the more serious side of the threads anyway, and the pics break the ice, what I HATE, the the repetitive use of the pics, ONCE IS GOOD AND ENOUGH. Also the repetitive use of the same quote over and over again. At first the lolcats and the pics bothered me, but now I am used to them, but no guys, keep it to a minimum. But do not get rid of them by any means.

Amen to that! I can get a lot of crap other places on the net, but RJ has been a sense of intelligent guys with something to say (as well as the joking around). I'm all for the razzing on someone, but I'd rather keep the essence of the place that caught my eye the first time I saw it.

Example: I had it in mind to work out at lunch today, as I have guests coming in from out of town. I noticed when I got in the office that I had forgotten my shorts. Whereas in past times I would have just skipped the workout, this time I went out and bought a pair so that I could work out. No excuses. This is the power of Real Jock.

Why is everyone blaming LOLcats again?

    Reasons why people hijack threads:

    1) The topic has been discussed before, and some of us don't care to discuss the same topic again, particularly if the same topic has resulted in a flame war before (especially racism/religion-atheism/republican-democrat threads).

    2) The topic is going downhill into a flamewar, and LOLcats are the intervention.

    3) Some people have no sense of humor and it's really fun to poke them around and see them heat up. icon_twisted.gif

If you really want to remedy this, why not post more? It's the same bunch of guys who regularly post here, so we can't help it if we get sick of each others' faces and only speak through LOLcat pictures.

This complaint of RJ topics declining is rooted in an elitist mentality anyway. The 'they're not jocks, why are they here?' kind of thing. Because yes, I am not a jock myself, but I am working out which was the reason I came here anyway and NOT the half-naked pics of people.

It was the forums that made me stay, and I admit I kinda miss the discussions of the past. But LOLcats didn't bring about the decline - it's simply because people stopped posting for whatever reason and are making the LOLcats the scapegoat.

Because despite the LOLcats there ARE intelligent discussions, they are mere diversions in a thread. It's the lack of YOUR input that makes them of less quality than before. This isn't a popularity contest, and yes I have noticed a distinct snobbery of the so-called past regulars, because we after all are 'new' regulars still. Instances when humor gets interpreted as a brainless post, when teasing gets interpreted as hostility, and compliments as come-ons. Something like 'Touch me not, I'm royalty, peasant!'.

If you want the quality to be back to before, why not POST MORE and be heard?

But yes, I'll cut back on the LOLcats (though I don't post that much LOLcats anyway).

    EDIT:

OMG IT'S AERO! Somebody call RBY! icon_lol.gif

ZDREW...we know you are not a mean or grumpy man, just very handsome!

...on "LOLCATS"....I agree....anything, even something "good" or "well intended" in excess, will spoil the mix or just "gets old". I find that many people, including me, are sometimes too busy to join the "mental olympics" with some really deep and insiteful commentary on all the topics in the various RJ forums. But we still want to participate and sometimes use a "canned" image, animation, video or audio piece from "youtube" or wherever to express our "interest", if not our sentiments, about being in the conversation, without needing to work too hard or long on the post. I enjoy the "color" and "flavor" that all of the cute graphics add. Sometimes a "picture" really is worth a thousand words, but most times it is a fast way out of thinking and working on an answer. I am as guilty as the next RJ poster, I just haven't used "LOLCATS"....
As to the original assertion that content quality of the posts in these forums has dropped, I can only say that we are all and individually responsible for what we post and what we respond to. If some inane flame war is getting the most hits and the most coments, it is because that is where the interest of the current online group lies. Give it a few hours and a new group will be online and some other topic will be the hot one. If you are posting all images or youtubes or lolcats or whatever as responses, expect that someone else will also be posting a similar image, youtube, lolcat or whatever as a response as well.
With the variety of guys and topics in the forums, nobody needs to feel compelled to only respond to the first three or four topics or threads that first hit your screen.....scroll down and see what else is going on, or start a new thread, not in the "GENERAL" category....the topics and posts are only as good and on topic, as the individuals posting. If a troll is just trying to stir some shit, ignore their post and don't give them the satisfaction of hijacking another thread....If you don't like images, graphics, videos, or sounds, don't use them....and don't respond to them. I honestly have nothing against the people who post LOLcats pictures in their additions to the threads, nor do I have anything against the pictures themselves, but even so I can't wait for the LOLcats fad to have run it's course. It's not necessarily because they detract from the "intellectual prowess" of the threads or somejunk like that; it's just that the novelty of them has worn off and gotten to be more annoying than cute.
