Are gays more racist than the general public? Are blacks more homophobic?

Gay bars seem to be more segregated than Atlanta in the 50s.

Most polls show black people have the highest levels of disapproval towards gays of any group. (This could change given Obama's same sex marriage decision.)

    Any thoughts?

Lets hope that there is increased acceptance and support of gays in the African-American community but until educational levels improve in poor, black neighborhoods and blacks start abandoning the storefront christian churches, not much is going to change in the immediate future. As for the gay community being more racist, yes there is a significant amount of racism among white gay men and even among Hispanic gay men. Until attitudes change and negative stereotypes die out, the gay community will remain deeply divided.

What could some of the root causes of gay racism be?

How do you define gay racism? I don't think for instance that having a sexual preference for a certain race makes you necessarily racist. Being completely closed minded to the idea may make you racist but like something turns you on or it doesn't so when someone says they don't find me attractive and they're a different race my mind doesn't leap to the idea of "racist".

On this we agree. But I do think that the way desire and who or what traits are sexually or romantically desirable can have racist overtones (e.g. white guys wanting a "Latin thug" in bed) via the objectification of a person based on the stereotypes related to their race. At the same time, I think desire itself is extremely complicated and to assume that what gets one off in bed is indicative of a larger ideology is reductive.

Gay bars being segregated. I think that has more to do with the musical selections than anything else.

Sometimes you don't feel like hearing Gaga, but want to hear some Jay-z. Or you don't want to hear some damn dance remix, but some bass.

I have also noticed that the bars and clubs that actually play a variety of music are usually integrated.

    From my observation, yes.

So you think black homophobia is restricted to poorly educated African-Americans?

Also you think think that gay racism is no worse than white racism in general?

I don't know why straight blacks hate us so. Similarly, I don't get the extra racism in the gay community. Explanations?

This assumes that gays are not part of the general public. That part of the argument is debunked before it ever got started.

NAACP recently announced a pretty high approval rating for gay marriage. Another myth debunked.

    Next?

*Polls are showing movement since Obama's announcement, if the movement is both true and holds, then blacks have become in recent years less homophobic than all Americans. I'm not sure I believe it yet.

EXACTLY! Only when Obama made his announcement did we begin to see a rethinking of attitudes.

Look, we can start throwing numbers around and start claim that this is all due to some typical view point of a particular group of people or we can accept the truth as it has been observe over the years. Homophobic attitude is not something more common in the black community than any other community, nor is racism any more apparent in the gay community. There is no proof to back any of this up. We can continue to debate it and hope that some possible explanation be provided, but we all know it would not be the case.

How are we defining "racism" here? Using slurs? Saying hateful things? Or generally have dating preferences?

Who you date is your own business, but some white gays seem to disdain black people.

Ah. Is that an anecdotal or scientific observation?

Anecdotal about gay disdain towards blacks, but backed by countless polls in terms of black homophobia.
