new to the nightshift

    I realize that this topic has been made before, here's where it's different:

    Hours are 6:30pm to 6:50am every other day, and my body is still getting used to it (tonight is day 2).

    there's also a smattering of 10 and 20 minute breaks dispersed every 2 hours, except at the last 3 hours of the shift. (10 at 8pm, 20 at 10pm, 10 at 12am, 20 at 2am, and 10 at 4am) This break is anytime within that hour, depending on when you are relieved for it. (I've made 4 sandwiches and brought 2 apples and a thermos of water for the shift)

    The job is monotonous small physical labour (putting handles on buckets).

    I figured I'd get my gym time in on the days off after I wake up for about 4pm or so, but with the "still getting used to it" I'm waking at 1pm~2pm.

    Does anyone have any helpful advice?

    I work 3rds in the hospital and for your own sanity Keep your same sched when you not working. IE still stay up late( even say till 5am on days off). Its beyond unhealthy for you to switch back and forth as your biological clock will never know what " time " it is. If you can't get to sleep easy take some benadryl for a while to" knock you out". That's about it unless you have more specifics, and I'm sure there are others with suggestions; as this is just my single humble opinion on the topic. icon_biggrin.gif

    By choice I works nights too. I work 4 nights in a row per week unless I want overtime. It's outside, physical work. I am able to switch to day shift life each week. Every other day would be very hard for me.

    On my work days I treat it as if it's a normal day shift other words I don't go to bed when I get home. I work 8p to 6:30a so I sleep from noon to 6p or so.

    I think with you every other day work schedule I would have to stay on the night shift schedule as had already been posted.

    I just started the night shift too and I work 8 p.m to 8 a.m now. Just started this shift last week and although its a lot more money and easier it is messing up with my sleep schedule and work out schedule. I would apprciate advice on how others who have late shifts get adjusted as well.

    How do you schedule working out, sleep, and diet timing while doing the night shift?
