Just booked a room at Island House for the third week in June. Looking forward to just chilling out by the pool during the day, visiting old town at night, and maybe going out on a boat one afternoon to snorkel. Any other RJ guys planning on being in Key West at that time?

Exact dates? There's a chance we'll be there, may depend on another gay couple who often travels with us. Won't be Island House, though I've stayed there when single. More likely we'll be on or right off Duval Street. Let's discuss in e-mail, see what happens. Have you been to Island House before?

I've been to Island House before but only as a guest of a couple of guys that stayed there. On my other visits to Key West I stayed at New Orleans House or other guest houses on Duval. I found New Orleans House fun but the club downstairs made it a bit noisy at night. I think Island House will be a fun change of pace place it seemed a bit bigger than the other places I stayed.

The noise from downstairs is why we only stay at New Orleans House if we can get one particular room, where we don't hear anything. If we meet down there we'll show you which room it is, has a full kitchen, a wonderful huge balcony overlooking Duval (it's where they do the Sushi Drop in a big red shoe New Year's Eve), and a second rear entrance to the nude sun deck.

Island House is indeed bigger in some respects, like the pool, and it has 2 hot tubs, one in the spa and one in an open-air atrium. I've had sex in the steam room, and there's an upstairs playroom with adult videos (the rooms have them, too), and touches like glory holes, for guys who like to feel like they've never left home. LOL!

The least expensive rooms have no separate bathrooms, you use a communal one in the hall with open group showers and side-by-side sinks, sorta mini-lockeroom. But actually for cruising I prefer it, great way to break the ice with other guests. Among the disadvantages of IH are limited parking, and it's quite a hike up Fleming to get to Duval, the heart of Old Town. You might consider renting a bike, which IH can arrange.

You'll get it, although being surrounded by ocean there's usually a good breeze to keep things from getting too stifling. It's actually worse on the mainland to the north. The thing is to stay in the shade and avoid the sun, which is very strong, adding to the sense of heat. Expect pop-up thunderstorms at almost anytime.

I love Key West in August, because the ocean water has become very warm by then, upwards of 85 degrees in the shallows at the beaches. You can stay in the water forever, you don't chill. And the tourists aren't very numerous, except for when a big cruise ship docks. And then they don't go too far outside of Old Town, except to ride the Conch Train or a pedicab, so you won't even know they've arrived, way down at Island House or on the beach. Just avoid Duval at those times.

Nope, it's gonna be totally empty. You'll have the entire island/wasteland to yourself.

Island house sucks!!! Stay at the Southernmost House Hotel/museum. We stayed there for the same price after leaving the Island House after 1 day. It was August 09. The pools were dirty, service sucked and one of the owners was this 60 yr old with an Aussie hat on that wouldn't leave us alone. the men that were naked there you wish were NOT! Southernmost has awesome rooms overlooking the pool and right past that the ocean. Classy place 16ft ceilings breakfast daily on our own balcony. Nice bar very clean pool. Many men and woman come to the bar/pool just for the day. We met so many people, 2 we still keep in touch with, the best part was renting jet skis and going out 60 miles from Cuba. Southernmost is on 1400 Duvall street 866-764-6633 Walking distance to all!!

MikemikeMike saidStay at the Southernmost House Hotel/museum.

We've considered it, but it's a little TOO shiny & perfect for us. More a Caribbean experience, and not gay, I'm not sure what a single guy would find there. Plus we don't spend that much time in our room anyway, or even on the premises.

We're out and about most of the time, seeing the outdoors of Key West, not the insides of a hotel property. And while it is on Duval, it's at the very end that's farthest from everything we like to do, a bit of a walk for us to go anywhere.

We prefer the run-down Key West "ramshackle" experience, which is truer to what Key West is all about. We're not afraid of a little coarser local flavor. It's like Southernmost doesn't belong there, dropped in from some other place, and really too big for our taste.

But, I know some people like that sanitized modern hotel experience, the real Key West would scare them, so it's good they should know their options. I'm sure we would enjoy it more if we were a straight married couple, rather than gay partners. But since we prefer gay company, we'll probably stick with the smaller gay guest houses, scruffy though they may be (not Big Ruby's, though), especially the clothing optional ones.

I was addressing the OP. Don't go then Art. Stay at a shit hole place. Plenty of gay men go to the bar there.

This is an open thread for general comment and discussion, and I'm addressing the OP, too. And I know far more about Key West than you do. Not as much as some, of course, but enough to know the Southernmost.

If sashaman doesn't like the Island House (and he's already booked there) he can certainly go somewhere else, if IH will refund him. My own partner won't go there, says it's a bathhouse.

But I could give the OP a number of recommendations for other gay places that he might enjoy more than staying in the middle of Straightsville, bar or no bar. He hasn't said so, but I wonder if he's arriving with someone or alone. That obviously could be a factor. Not to mention his/their own tastes. I like authentic local Key West flavor, they may like modern imported atmosphere.

The one big advantage of Southernmost to the gay places, I will admit, is it's beachfront. If that's an important factor, then consider it.

Thanks for the word of caution and recommendation. Actually, I think Island House may have had some renovations since you visited. I was there as a day guest of some guys staying there and it looked decent enough. Not a luxury resort by any means but not dirty and falling apart; and their room that faced the pool was actually quite nice and looked to have been updated within the last year or so.

I'm familiar with Southernmost and have stayed on the east side of Duval in the past, though not at Southernmost. It is nice but I think part of the charm of Key West is getting a bit down and dirty, like hanging out with a group of tourists just off the cruise ships for the day at Sloppy Joe's and cutting loose. Also, part of the appeal of the Island House is the vibe there compared to other places. The guys seem more relaxed there and very social.

The great thing is that there are options in Key West to accommodate different tastes.

Yes. I've been there in the summer before and it is hot. But no hotter than the rest of Florida when you take into account the breezes. Plus, one can be in a swimsuit or shorts and a light shirt pretty much all day so it's all good. icon_cool.gif

Are you driving down or will you take the ferry from Ft. Myers to Key West? You told me about that sometime back and sounds as if that will eliminate a lot of traffic and drive time.

I found air fare from Orlando to Key West at $305 round trip and it's nonstop on Airtran.

The plane may be faster but the drive is delightful.

I hear you! It's a one hour flight (versus a 9 hour drive), nonstop (no connection in Miami) and I'm not fighting traffic on 95 in South Florida, but I will miss the drive through the Keys.

One would think after living in Florida for 33 years, I would have been to Key West, but have yet to experience it.
