If only the US could cut the size of its government like Canada did...

    Details at the link:

    http://www.cato.org/pubs/policy_report/v34n3/cprv34n3-1.html

Two decades ago Canada suffered a deep recession and teetered on the brink of a debt crisis caused by rising government spending. The Wall Street Journal said that growing debt was making Canada an "honorary member of the third world" with the "northern peso" as its currency. But Canada reversed course and cut spending, balanced its budget, and enacted various pro-market reforms. The economy boomed, unemployment plunged, and the formerly weak Canadian dollar soared to reach parity with the U.S. dollar.

In some ways the United States is in even worse fiscal shape today than Canada was two decades ago. For one thing baby boomers are now retiring in droves, which is pushing the federal government deeper into debt every year. America risks becoming a "first world" country like those in Europe, where huge deficit spending is wrecking economies and ruining opportunities for young people.

America needs to get its fiscal house in order, and Canada has shown how to do it. Our northern neighbor still has a large welfare state, but there is a lot we can learn from its efforts to restrain the government and adopt market-oriented reforms to spur strong economic growth.

Without question, the Canadian feds are way more fiscally responsible than in the US. But this study fails to point out how much more spending there is at the provincial level than at the state level. For an accurate study, a researcher would need to add together all federal, state/provincial and local government spending for both countries and then do the comparison. Another big burden on the US economy is defence. No other large country commits such a big portion of its GDP to military spending, which is the least economically productive use of limited resources. With so many military commitments and backers, it will not be easy for the US to reduce military spending.

Yes, that's correct, the Liberal Party trounced the Conservative Party in 1993.

I think it's time, (seeing as how welfare etc is mentioned) that we take a moment to discuss Sodom and what a Sodomite really is.

    Ezekiel 16:49

"Behold, this was the iniquity of thy sister Sodom: pride, fulness of bread, and prosperous ease was in her and in her daughters; neither did she strengthen the hand of the poor and needy."

So it appears both Riddler and Southbeach are behaving like Sodomites.

    Nice going.

Who knew you are a religious zealot? Yep sometimes it takes Nixon to go to China - are you familar with history? icon_wink.gif

Now, as for the Liberal party and the Conservatives in 1993 - you do realize that it's been a Conservative government through the financial crisis and for whom they have been lauded as being remarkably and fiscally restrained compared to other governments? Too bad your narrative doesn't fit - even if there is a lot that there isn't to like about the Conservatives, there's just a lot more to dislike about the Liberals.

lol, if I'm your definition of a religious zealot, you have much bigger issues than I thought or realized.

Nice try bringing the current gov't into this. We're speaking specifically of your claims about the 1990s - stick to the subject matter. icon_lol.gif

Incidentally, we never voted for the Liberals.

The irony is that I was part of the young Liberal party at the time. icon_wink.gif

Sorry, but what are my claims of the 1990s? You might want to read or consider the fact that I'll point out your strawmen before you bother making them.

The population is irrelevant when we're talking about the size of government relative to GDP since that accounts for those differences... but yes, I will say that the US does have more global responsibilities than Canada but the Liberals starved the military through their terms in office which is why they have such old equipment that now needs either substantial retrofitting when it can even be done, or replacing.

Historically however, even after you include the cost of the recent wars, the US is spending less than it has. The difference in recent years is discretionary spending and entitlements - the latter of which is going to get a whole lot worse given aging populations (which, incidentally, is even more of a pronounced issue for Canada if you look at the demographic scales).

more riddler stuff, and "The population is irrelevant when we're talking about the size of government relative to GDP"

D'oh, that's the most riddler-diculous measurement of being able to govern a country of people, 10 times the population size as ours, I've ever read.

It's relative to GDP. You do understand what relative means? In fact you could make a case that with greater population density the cost of governance should go down.

And your point is? As I recall at the time you just had to be under 25 to join the young liberals - which is a requirement I (obviously) met. I even volunteered.
