I'm looking for a LGBT elder, or an ally, to do a oral history report for my class project. I was wondering if there are any fellows here who are interested in participating in a short interview based on their gay bar experiences (US or Canada) prior to 1981. Take note that this is the end of the disco boom and the outbreak of AIDs.

The interview consists of about 20 questions done online either through email or a Skype call and your name can remain anonymous. Please let me know if you (or anyone else you know who's qualified) is interested icon_biggrin.gif Your help is greatly appreciated!

How elderly? My partner was in the adult gay scene from the early 1950s onward (born 1934), including while in the US Army, or is that too early for you? E-mail me some sample questions and I'll show them to him, see if he's interested. Though 63 myself, I didn't come out until 1995, so I wouldn't be eligible for your report.

That would be great! It honestly doesn't matter how early, as long as it's before 1981. A few sample questions include:

Where did you primarily attend bars and how did you find them?
Was the space obvious that it was gay? Flyers, signs, etc..?
What were the people like? What did they wear?
How was this place perceived by the people around it?

There are also some personal questions such as at what age did you came out
and what were the challenges you faced/risked by doing so? These don't have to be answered if he's not comfortable with it.

OK, I'll approach him. He's gonna tell you about the gay bar scene in Boston c.1950s, which was Mafia controlled. And about bar raids, and being stripped by the cops to show you weren't wearing women's underwear (an actual crime on the books).

I'll talk to him about it. I'll give you my private e-mail addy, and he'll reply through that.
