Rant on Weight Room Etiquette: Unnecessarily Crowding Me

I was deadlifting today and in-between sets I was doing crunches on a body ball. It the middle of a set of crunches with my earbuds in, some rando walks up and interrupts me to ask if I was using this deadlifting stand. The stand is in arms reach of me with my towel and water sitting right on it. I told him wait a minute and finished out my set of crunches. He dumps his crap next to the stand and wonders off to grab a 100 lbs bar. He comes back with the bar, hops on the stand and goes about doing his set.

I was not using the stand however I was using the bar that I took off of that stand to do deadlifts. I intentionally worked out near that stand because nobody ever uses it and it's away from the busier equipment. Everybody who deadlifts near that stand removes the bar and works on the floor rather than on the stand. I had my bar set up w/ 3x 45 lbs plates on each side right in front of the stand.

If I were to leave the bar where it was I would have been deadlifting with either my face or my ass in the vicinity of idiot's crotch. To avoid this situation I shoved a decline bench out of the way and rolled my bar away from the stand blocking the walk way in my gym as I mean mugged idiot.

At a glance, I saw 10 different spots in the gym where dude could have done his exercise without inconveniencing anybody. I get soooo effing pissed when people crowed me for no reason. For real, asshole!?!!

    I hear 'ya.

Tonight I was two miles through my treadmill hike when a group of men emerged from the basketball court to hold a loud conversation next to my machine for half an hour.

Dudes, headphones doesn't mean I can block you out and the crap music the district manager insists all 24hr fits blast.

I keep forgetting my pez-dispenser of Xanax that is usually required for Costco parkinglots on weekends.

If he's straight, politely tell him to move.
If he's gay, push the bitch. Lol! icon_biggrin.gif

The only thing more annoying than someone crowding you at the gym is when someone uses multiple machines and waits 5 minutes between going back and forth. When you politely ask them if they're working on said machine (which you know they are) to try and get them to hurry the fuck up, they get all butt-hurt and tell you that they have 24 more sets to do and that they "just started". Why is that when you ask someone how many more sets, they always miraculously just started??

Btw, OP, I'm not saying that this situation was you, but it reminded me of this annoying habit at the gym

Well, you have a point. I've waited for a hammer-strength machine that had the proverbial "saving this" towel draped over the seat...for almost 20 minutes.

Turns out someone forgot. I hope there was an ambulance involved.

Circuit set abuse actually seems to get worse late at night.

This is why I'll be leaving for the gym in about 20 minutes(~4:45 edt). I'm the first one there and usually have the place to myself until 6:30 or so.

would those ten different spots have provided a stand, which seems to be what he wanted to use his exercise for? i mean, you could've done your exercise in ten different spots because all you used was the bar. and you were supersetting on a piece of equipment you weren't actually using. if i were that guy, i probably wouldn't have forced you out, but i would have politely stood to the side bitching in my head along the lines of look at this douche who's hogging the stand area and isn't even using it, and on top of it he's supersetting

Hah! No, I totally know what you are talking about. If I'm going to superset something I have a rule that everything I'm using has to be within arms reach of one another. I hate when people try to monopolize multiple pieces of equipment so I try to be considerate of others in return. I totally agree w/ you.

He was forward bending with the 100 lbs bar on the stand. He could have been standing on the ground and still had the same range of motion. There is no advantage to using the stand over just doing his exercise on the floor. If anything the floor is more advantageous because it provides a larger more stable platform compared to the stand.

I could not have done my exercise in the 10 locations he could have. He was using a fixed barbell where as I was using a standard 45 lbs barbell. Fixed bars are much shorter and can fit pretty much anywhere vs a barbell that takes up much more space. To avoid crowding anybody else with my deadlifting is exactly why I chose to work near the stand that rarely gets used.

While you were politely standing on the side bitching in your head about me being a greedy douche, I'd be finishing my set thinking, obvi this bish is family...

Yep. I get in there at around 5:15 and things usually go very smoothly.

I workout on a military base and my gym is not set up in circuits like 24 is. We have cross fitters who set up their own circuits and take up entire sections of the gym for the duration of their workouts... If you've never shared a gym with cross fitters, you are fortunate. I fuggin' hate them.

As far as the towel; I'll stand right there next to the piece of equipment for up to 4 min. If nobody shows up, I'll respectfully place their stuff to the side and assume they forgot their crap.

Lol I got some attitude from this closet case 2 days ago. He wondered off from his ez curl bar and didn't leave any towel, water, or anything to indicate it was in use. I didn't even see him leave the bar. All I saw was that there was a bar sitting by itself so I helped myself to it. As I was setting up for a set he came back looking all befuddled like where did my bar go. I asked if he was still using it and he was like, "YEAH!" #Woooosah If looks could kill, his brain matter would have been sprayed across the gym. The Real Housewife of Atlanta in me said F@CK THIS HOE! I returned the bar though. This is actually the second time this cunt has given me some stank ass attitude. The first time was a few weeks ago when tranny wanted the decline bench I was on when there was another one that nobody was using right next to the one I was on. The 2x decline benches in my gym are from different manufacturers. Most people prefer the one I was on LOL. I am so close to letting bitch know her tribal tattoo is not age appropriate.

I never refuse to let someone work in. No muscle on my body is worth loosing my manners. Well.. maybe my heart... or... tongue. Tongues are important. Anyway, point is... why not just let the guy work in? Do a few extra crunches to pass the minute or so you're out. You won't gain 30lbs by letting someone onto your machine. It is after all, a public gym. Everyone is always so eager for reasons to hate. I read your post and see the potential for you to make a buddy. Or at least have your mood and day go much smoother, instead of getting so worked up over something that's honestly, entirely insignificant.

Edit* I see it's a Military Gym. Not exactly public. But not too different in the context of my post.

I don't mind sharing but do not interrupt me in the middle of a set. That is just flat out rude.

LOL nah. I break people down into 2 groups. You're either considerate or inconsiderate. I don't care if you are balls to the walls every workout or just a Monday warrior: please put your weights away, don't tie up several machines during peak hours and don't disrupt the other patrons in the gym. Most of all, please wipe down the equipment when you're done using it. MRSA is not sexy. Okay I'm done ranting icon_biggrin.gif
