    Dear Diary,

So as a graduation present, I get to go on a trip this summer. I was thinking of going with my best friend and room mate, but it looks like he won't be able to afford it. Is it a good idea to travel overseas alone? I'm not sure how I feel about this right now. I feel like I will be missing out on a lot by not having someone there to share this experience.icon_neutral.gif

Traveling alone can be a good experience, and sometimes can make it easier to get to know people, plus you don't have to agree with anyone on what to do or where to go at any given time.

I would, however, recommend staying at hostels or doing couchsurfing so you'll still be around others. I've been traveling for work the last couple weeks and was staying at a hotel and it was pretty depressing, but I just changed to a hostel and it's so much nicer. One thing I don't enjoy though is eating at restaurants alone. icon_neutral.gif

Just go. It'll be a little unsettling at first, but with your personality you should have no problem making new friends. icon_wink.gif

The more I think about it, the more I think I actually WANT to go alone. It will be my first trip post break up, and first trip alone ever. It will be a way to get away from everyone I know for awhile. I guess my main worries concern me getting raped and butchered and left to die in an alley with nobody around to notice I'm gone. Well, I don't have much issue with the rape part, but I don't wanna die in a foreign country.....icon_cry.gif

I do a lot of traveling by myself and I love it. It is a different experience with someone else, but I too find that I have a better contact when I'm by myself. By nature, I'm a very social person so being alone forces me to make contact. I also travel almost exclusively in apartments. I love to be able to set up a "local life" where things are just normal. In short, you'll have fun one way or the other, the experiences will just be different. Bon voyage.

Agreed, I went off to Paris and London in 2006 solo and I had a blast, it was more like a present for myself. I stayed at a hostel and met a bunch of Europeans over there. I usually just grab a quick bite to eat and then on to the next thing. Traveling in pairs could be fun but going solo could be very Zen and rewarding/eye opener experience. icon_cool.gif

I travel a lot for work. 2 weeks a month. Each time I go with a group, but I find that spending a lot of time by myself is the best part of the trip!

I get to see as much as I want at my own pace. I think it will be great for you as you just graduated. It will give you time to reflect. Figure out what you want to do further in life. Sometimes in these moments alone I learn the most about myself.

So anyways, I think it will be great for you and also push you to meet/talk to strangers! It's really awesome. Sit at a bar, talk to the bartender, and talk to the people around you.

Keep us posted! Hope your trip goes well!
