Personal Attacks!

I've noticed in the more heated forum discussions that a lot of people, when confronted with opposing views, tend to turn to personal attacks in order to "win" (and i used that term loosely) whichever argument seems to be going on.

Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE to argue; i find that it's pretty much the best way to understand what someone stands for, and to experience new trains of thought. However, through both debate classes and just discussions in general, I've learned that making personal attacks against others and refuting fact with opinion is the quickest way of turning a healthy, educated argument into an all out brawl for "intellectual" supremacy.

For example, a few days ago i posted on a forum about how sick i was of sex being a taboo topic, and how i think it should be legal to have sex in public, comparing humans to animals in that we are the only animals that have sex in private. Now I know i'm a crazy liberal, and I knew posting that many people would disagree with me (which im used to icon_biggrin.gif ). And many did, claiming that humans cannot be compaired to animals at this point, as we have evolved far past them in mental capacity. This was actually a really valid argument, and so I respect whoever brought it up. Good point!

However, one person took what i said, and pretty much made it a personal attack on me, essentially calling me wrong and telling me to "grow up". I'm sorry, i didn't realize that my belief in sexual freedom was an immature sentiment...

I just don't understand why some people cant simply express their views and argue for/against others without bringing anything personal into the mix. I know everyone thinks differently, and people are going to disagree and argue, but why would you want to deliberately attack someone and/or make them feel bad about what they believe in? Can't you just respect others beliefs, live and let live, let bygones be bygones, agree to disagree, etc. etc. etc.?

Why does it always have to be about right and wrong? icon_sad.gif

So, the way I see, many people have been complaining about the lack of intellectual and/or opinionated posts on the forums nowadays. I think one of the reasons people may be posting more "frivolous" posts on the forums (and i use that term loosely; people should be able to post what they want icon_smile.gif ) may not be because the quality of member is declining in Realjock, but simple because everyone does post about what they believe in, they get flamed out the ass (and not in the good wayicon_razz.gif ).

So that's my rant. I just hope their can be a mutual goal among all members to make the forums a haven to post our thoughts and ideals away from the judgment and pressures of society. If you dont agree with someone, that's fine, but please dont turn against them!

Yes, I'm guilty of this too. But only when I was also personally attacked. I'll try to restrain myself from now on then. I got quite a temper when provoked though. icon_confused.gif

Good point BearCub17. For some reason people feel it is okay to be rude and obnoxious to others. I love the humor that many inject into the posts but not when it's attacking others.

I'm no therapist but it seems to me you have an issue with yourself if you need to make others feel stupid to try to make a point.

I have a thick hide, I expect others to be just as tough. If you can't handle it, quit.

hmm, i see your point, but cant we get our points across in a way that having emotional stability or being an emotional wreck is a non-issue?

I agree with BearCub17's theory that the quality of forum topics has leveled off due to the fear of starting a flame war. I am trying to limit my opinion to one per "serious" thread so I don't get caught up in the childish intellectual hissy fits that sometimes happen on RJ.

BTW I hope I never see the day that people can have sex in view of everyone else, although it may be an effective birth control method (if that does not turn people off sex nothing will). Just like I hope the day never comes when people will be allowed to talk on their cell phones on an airplane.

I don't like them and try to avoid contributing to them. Though I have a couple of times. But not unless someone starts it first. If that person is really rude or nasty, then I feel obliged to strike back. And I do. If they make personal remarks, then I do the same. In very strong terms. I especially hate to go there. But that usually ends it.

I greatly prefer civilized discussion. Flame wars are boring and a colossal waste of time.

Personal attacks have no place on a site like this. We can always disagree without name calling or other juvenile behavior.

It can be challenging, but I think it really says something about who you are when put under pressure.
State your case and your opinion. Nothing wrong with disagreement, so long as its reasonable.

becuase some people are very insecure and find the need to "win" when hiding behind their little computers.
    LOL.
I wouldn't give it too much thought or energy.

I seem to recall quite a few people being removed for being abusive on the forums in the past, largely because RJ is supposed to be a positive environment overall. I think if someone can't handle THAT, he should quit... and we'd all be the better for it.
