I saw the new final school budget today and although I'm lucky to have a job, there will be no raise for the fifth year, teachers will have to contribute more to their health care costs AND the elementary school day will be lengthened by 15 minutes. The first two are bad enough but the lengthening of the school day seemed like an insult to us considering everything else. BUT I'm sure there are people here who have it worse than me. Tell me your story. Misery loves company.

You're a teacher? You mean a coach / gym teacher. How come I never had a hot guy like you as a gym teacher? I wouldn't have ditched gym classes so much.

Teachers are some of the least appreciated professionals anywhere. Its a shame how low teachers get paid, and how overworked they are. Not only are you a stud, but you're a gentleman, and I hope we can legislate some rules to make teachers more appreciated/get paid more.

Scott Adams "Dilbert" website used to have forums where people bitched about their wurk and the other users voted on how bad each post was. And of course, it provided fodder for new cartoon strips. All in all, it seemed like a very unhealthy exercise.

The people with real tales of woe from the trenches don't get off one minute before 5 and can't access RJ on their work computers. This will become a legitimate thread soon.

Teachers have been underpaid for years, so this is no surprise.

You have my respect for continuing to do what you love in spite of being treated (and paid) like shit. icon_biggrin.gif

Why, please, why can we not guarantee that teachers are paid a decent living wage? I can think of few people who do more important work. My suspicion is that the educational field is top heavy. Worse, it has developed a set of blocks and blinds that makes it very difficult to overcome institutional inertia.

Advice to this is simple, if you like what you're doing, stay with it or if you're unhappy, do something about it and change your journey. I sort of considered a career in teaching before but after speaking to teachers and doing more research on it, I decided not to. Maybe you need a career change into doing something that you love more. As far as being a teacher/budget concern, are you teaching/coaching at a public place? It's maybe a little better if you go for a private school structure, they have more funding there. Just some thoughts. icon_biggrin.gif

We have a friend who was a special ed teacher for many years. She would always complain about teaching, the low salary, the job frustrations - and was jealous of those of us in the group with suit-y jobs. So one year she quit and got a job at an education think tank. Within 6 months she was tired of the grind, missing her kids, her flexibility, her summer leave. She went back to teaching, eventually got her PhD and is still teaching, though college level.

Anyway, I know it's frustrating and I'm not making light of it - it's not a profession I would have the patience for - but the grass is always greener.

I think what hurts most is parents aren't willing to put their money where their mouths are. Someone suggested raising property taxes to help bail out the school system. The community came out in full force to say this wasn't acceptable. We've gotten to the point where we ask parents to donate hand sanitizer, boxes of tissues...that kind of thing. Very few do. Tests are on the overhead because we don't have enough money to buy paper for run offs. And yet the school board gifts themselves with iPads to save money on paper. I think the fastest way for a locality to go downhill is to have a poor educational system. But it's happening all over the country.

Don't get me started - you can't tax for ANYTHING in Virginia now, no matter how worthwhile. The roads in Northern Virginia are at capacity and falling apart, and the state legislature won't even let us tax ourselves.

I love what I do. I feel like working with children is what God put me on earth to do. If I could just go through the day and not have to deal with any adults I'd be a happy man. But that doesn't mean I want to do it for free.
