Well, this has been long in the making considering she's been doing everything else but training! Plus the story about her knee injury has changed with just about every interview she's given icon_rolleyes.gif

Her shot at making the Olympic team was pretty low anyway, so hopefully this attention will blow over soon and we can focus on the gymnasts who actually have a chance of going to London. At least she gave this statement before the US Championships in a few days.

Meanwhile, does anyone else think this "shrine" on USA Gymnastics webpage makes it look like she died or something? Haha!

Which reminds me, The Onion totally called it:

    LOL love Onion.

My foggy memory is that I didn't like Shawn in the last olympics. Just something bugged me. I think I like Nastia because she's tall as fuck, and it's kind of a handicap on the bars but she won gold anyway (right?)

Nastia is rather tall, but there have been much taller gymnasts who were incredibly successful (e.g. Svetlana Khorkina). Actually what makes her so good on bars is that she has very flexible shoulders, so she's able to do a lot of complicated pirouettes in her swinging elements.

She won gold in the all around and silver on the bars. She actually tied with He Kexin (the gold medalist), but the tie was broken after a complicated formula was put into place for their scores, so she ended up second.

In the end, Nastia showed up at the US Classic in Chicago recently and did a good beam routine in her first competition since 2009. Shawn Johnson didn't do shit. She skipped the Classic and petitioned to the US Championships. But now she's done!

LOL! Yes. There are currently no Svetlanas on any of the national teams from Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus. The name "Svetlana" has recently grown to be a bit old fashioned.

Be prepared for more "Nastias" because Anastasia has been by far the most popular Russian name for girls since the end of the Soviet Union.

I didn't know that's what it stood for. I thought the parents intuitively knew she'd turn out to be a nasty ho. I confess that's another reason I liked her.

Really? Anastasia. I wonder if that is in reflection of Tsar Nicky II's youngest, the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna?

Well, just look at how many modern symbols of Russia originated during the years of the Russian Empire. The current flag and coat of arms were the same ones used during the Russian Empire. Apparently many were looking towards old culture of the Russian Empire to give Russia a new identity after 70 years of the USSR.

The popularity of Anastasia is a fad like any other fad. While the name boomed in popularity starting in the '90s, surely new trends in naming will take take place soon enough.

Anyway, this thread is about Shawn Johnson icon_rolleyes.gif

I have plenty of moments of confusion too because there are some gymnasts with similar names as big celebrities, so every time I see a name on a headline somewhere, I quickly think they're talking about the gymnast when they mean someone else. For example, there's a popular Venezuelan gymnast named Jessica López whose affectionately known as "J.Lo" in the gymnastics community.

I must admit that Nastia impressed me at the Classic. I, along with many others, doubted her attempt at this comeback because she took forever to make a firm decision on trying out for London. It was hard to take her seriously.

Well, she showed up and upped Shawn Johnson icon_wink.gif

I have to agree with SkinnyBitch regarding Shawn Johnson's brand of gymnastics during the 2008 Olympic Games: wasn't a fan. Admittedly, she brought a bucket-load of difficulty to the table, but she failed to stick most of her landings, and had craptastic leaps throughout the competition.

Gymnastics aside, there's always been something about her personality that just charms and captivates everyone within sight. It didn't really shine through until after Beijing unfortunately, which is a damned shame... but I guess it's not fair to judge a 17-year-old on their character, is it? They've barely lived, after all.

I'm glad that she's decided to officially retire; her potential was never limited to her physical prowess, and I look forward to seeing what she does with herself outside of gymastics. Hopefully she'll change the world, and for the better! icon_biggrin.gif

I think Shawn Johnson has a wonderful character and personality. No doubt about that. If anything, she's been a very positive person to represent gymnastics in the media. I hope she can continue to promote the sport through her sponsors. By the way, her autobiography comes out on Tuesday icon_wink.gif

Now she has to step aside and root for her teammate, Gabby Douglas, who is hella amazing!

To be perfectly honest, I don't really use Facebook that much anymore to stay in touch with my friends. However, many gymnastics sources post updates and live competition quick hits on their Facebook pages, so that's why I kept my account.

What? You can't create another Facebook account just to follow? Just don't fill out any info or post a pic.

Although I'm going to end up posting gym stuff anyway icon_cool.gif
