    This show is a fail.
The average person doesn't know shit about opera.
The audience members are trying to find something to cry over.

I enjoy these talent-type shows as much as anyone, but where I have issue with many of them is the corny back-stories that ask us to suspend our disbelief and just fall for anything the producers want to feed us. I hate when they take their audience for idiots. In the case of this kid, we are suppose to believe that he has never EVER sang in front of ANYONE. Really? He managed to get his whole family to the show in the audience. Was that going to be for a surprise he had for them? "Hey mom & dad, I just happen to be on "America's Got Talent" tonight, can you make it?". Really? How about the screeners for the show? Are we suppose to believe that he was not asked to first sing for them before even getting chosen for the show? You don't just end up on TV on a top-rated show like"America's Got Talent" without a lengthy screening process. Yes, the kid's got talent, real talent, but the back-story they gave him was amateur.

I agree, the kid has a very nice falsetto range, but the idea that he's never sung in front of ANYONE was an obvious fabrication.

I don't have an operatic voice, but I did take voice lessons for several years when I was younger, and my suspicion about all of these "opera lite" singers who show up on America's Got Talent and the like is that REAL opera singers probably shake their heads in disbelief. I don't even particularly like opera, and I can usually hear the quite obvious flaws in their performances - then the audience gives them a standing ovation. icon_rolleyes.gif

I was thinking of Neal Boyd, the AGT winner from season 2. I thought he sucked.

Another case of "Don't just the book by the cover".

Maybe if the only thing that comes from this is a moment of appreciation for another human being, a single human being "moved" by another's song, a single moment of a human being feeling the courage to go on and live, then maybe the purpose has been served.

Haters should really consider doing themselves and others a favor and die. You will be out of your pain, and you will stop bringing pain into the lives of others. Please die now. Thank you.

Not sure who you are referring to here as "hater", but look in the mirror, buddy --- that is, if you can stand the view. There is nothing more "hateful" than wishing someone dead.

I actually like that dark gothic stuff, when it's really well done. icon_redface.gif

Yes, he does because that's who and what he wants to be. What's it to you? Jealous because you don't have the guts to be you, Mr. No Photos?

    Haters gotta hate.

Ah, the boob tube. Makes me feel all warm & tingly inside. Where's my neighbor? I feel like a hug.

(In case the audience at home is lost, there's the dude in the wings: "Now *that's* talent." Facepalm.)

I watched his backstory but closed my eyes when he sang. It's just another dude who can sing falsetto. It takes balls for an alleged first timer to do it on a main stage, but really? Talent?

Had he gotten a haircut, shown up for for his audition sans makeup in a polo and khakis, and done the same backstory - with the same dramatic poses - he wouldn't have elicited the same reaction. The only real talent I saw was how someone could use their image for ethos. A misunderstood Marilyn Manson fan with a penchant for opera? How original!

If he really wanted to impress, he should have gone with a technical aria instead of a lyrical one.

Acceptance doesn't mean that we have to agree with you that he was particularly good. Some do, some don't.

Nice to see that not much has changed here lately...still the same bullies there have always been. Surprised the likes of "chainers" hasn't reared his head.
We all hear the soap boxers raving on about "acceptance"...but when put to the test...how many really PRACTICE it?? Obviously, there a several on this thread who don't know the meaning of the word.

To be clear, I think all of these "Got talent" shows lack integrity. I wasn't talking about this particular clip, although it's not an exception.

His singing skills are nothing special, especially if judging him to an opera singers' standard. Opera singers are HARDCORE MUTHAFUCKA singers, in a league all of their own. They train hard to perfect the stuff that no one even appreciates. This guy hasn't been trained from what I can tell, he's just a fan who sings along. But as showme says, most people don't know that, and they gave him a standing ovation.

I think the messed up thing about these shows are that the more a person looks like they won't be able to sing, the more people sensationalize them.
I was pretty pissed off watching that first clip with Susan Boyle. She walked out and people were laughing at her looks. They assumed she was going to be a total joke, and when she showed she could sing, it was so much higher than their expectations. But an objective judge listening to her would recognize that she wasn't an amazing singer. Such silly set-up.

Same with kids. They seem like they're going to suck but when one with a little talent comes along, the world assplodes in amazement. I can't handle that kind of false over- and under-appreciation of people so I just don't watch.
