How much should I weigh at 5'9"?

I'm about 5'9" (maybe come up a tad short of it) so what should my ideal weight be? Due to health issues in my past, I was pretty overweight (242 pounds) and have lost about 13 pounds so far. Most people seem shocked when I tell them I weigh that much, because they say I don't look it at all. However, I care more about being healthy and feeling good about myself, so I'm really trying hard to work out and burn off whatever I can.

I come from a big-boned Italian family, and could never see myself weighing anything less than 180 pounds. I just don't have a slender/slim build. My bones are big and thick and I have a bigger frame with broad shoulders. Do you think if I could get to 180 pounds that would be a good weight for me, or should I still aim for less?

Go aggressively for 180 not a pound more. When you achieve that milestone - CELEBRATE. Then and only then - take a fresh look at yourself - how you feel and judge whether further weight reduction is appropriate for your health and personally the way you want to look and feel.

    Good luck.

You should talk to your doctor. Only he/she is qualified to give you the correct info.

Idk doctors go by that little chart and that chart sucks. There are so many things wrong with it and so many variables.

Go to a nutritionist or something that deals with that stuff on a more personal level....

Your body type may be different as well. Since he doesn't have a picture - can only go by what he is saying. I am just glad he has a personal weight target/goal substantially less than 242 (which is unhealthy - regardless of body type).

I agree with you Defenseon regarding those "charts".

    This.

At 5'9", that 240ish pounds could be mostly muscle, or it could be mostly fat, or it could be somewhere between. If you aren't obese, then the number on the scale is useless as a measure of fitness, and it's counterproductive (IMHO) to expend all your effort into making that number go down.

Instead of focusing on your weight, make your goal something more relevant to fitness and less susceptible to short-term fluctuations. Try aiming for a particular body-fat percentage, or a particular waist size, or being able to run some distance without having to stop to walk.

It depends on what ya do with what ya got...also bone structure.

    I am 5'8" and somehwere around 145ish (I don't weigh myself often).

BUT - I have managed to make a little something outta what I got - so it looks fairly decent. Although I am technically scrawney - no one really thinks of Me that way.

Go for what feels and looks best for YOU - don't worry about general numbers!!!

I was wondering about that, too. How exactly are you "technically scrawny"?

LOL - I have rather low body fat and some decent definition so I am able to take a nice enuff pic.

But I am given waaaaay too much credit in terms of Mass. Imma kinda small compared to most RJ Dudes. Ask any of the boys on here who have met Me in RL. I fill out a t-shirt pretty well - but am not exactly HUGE DUDE!!!!!

Take a look at Clay. His arm is slightly larger than My entire upper body.

'Course He also gets confused by the light in the refrigerator...but THAT is a different thread....

Point being, it is more important that you make the most of what you have rather than try to compete with other Dudes.

Oh can I do it instead, 7FA?

OP, don´t get caught on numbers, BMI or other crap. Big newbie mistake.

Instead think body composition, waist size and body proportion. This feed into how you look naked. Numbers are misleading.

A more intelligent goal would be something like (and this is a random example, not what you should do) 33/32 inch waist, 15% body fat, higher muscle percentage.. (you could chose a body part such as chest, legs, ass or whatever you wanted to have

You will get much more satisfying results this way.

You look great Cash. I am 5'8" and weigh 145 as well. I feel good at that weight, but is certainly a lot lighter than most of the guys I know.
I wear a 28 in some shorts as well, which is a smaller waist size than I had when I graduated from high school. Definitely don't want the waist any smaller, I don't want to shop in the boy's department!

I agree with the others -- focus on your body composition instead of numbers right now. Being healthy and feeling good are terrific goals, but they might not be specific enough to get you to work toward some target. Based on what you say, you are definitely heavier than what the "normal" range is for someone your height.

I am 5'9" and weigh about 160 pounds with body fat around 13%, if that's a reference for you.

As for Cash and fitone, they have lower body fat and less weight than me. I wouldn't call either of them anything except healthy and attractive.

Overweight with muscle can be a problem for kidneys, liver, heart; basically any organ that has to manage/move lots of chemicals (like oxygen, CO2, protein, urea, lipids, salts, sugars).

Overweight with fat, most people agree, is a greater burden on your body, as the increased blood flow, oxygen requirements, strain on joints, heart, liver, kidneys isn't being offset by any metabolic benefit. You'll have a greater tendency to plaque up, develop type 2 diabetes, enlarge your heart and suffer liver and kidney damage. It's not a certainty, but statistically a greater percentage of people overweight with fat will develop these problems.

At 5'9" you're close to my height. If you think that I look too bulky, shoot for 170 lbs. If you want to look more muscular than me, shoot for 190. If you're fat, lose it (down to approximately 10%) and see where your weight bottoms out.

You're 145? I could pick you up and toss you across the room so you landed on the couch like I did the kids at my friend's birthday party Saturday. I mean if you enjoy that sort of thing.....the kids liked it. Not so much for the moms...something about the adult should know better blah blah blah. I'm a human carnival ride baby.
