Excessive wax buildup in the ears...

I have noticed when my t-cell count is very low I get an extremely huge amount of wax buildup and dry skin in the ears. I have mentioned this to numerous doctors and they all find nothing wrong with my ears. Does anyone else who is infected with HIV have this issue?

Personally, I have never had that issue. However, I guess it is possible

If your ear wax is the dry, crumbly type you can by OTC drops that soften and break up the hard earwax.

My doc always tells me my ears are totally clean when he checks them. I never use Q-tips.

When I shower, I let the stream go over my ear so warm (not scalding) water heats up the inner ear. And then I will take a very soapy pinky finger and spin it around inside. Don't rinse immediately, so it can do its thang.

Then I rinse & repeat. That's it. Q-tips just push wax into the ear, so they aren't a great idea. I only ever use them just after the shower when the wax is melted and will absorb into the Q-tip.

I have heard of putting mineral oil in the ear while sleeping (on your side), and then washing it out in the morning, to soften hard wax.

there is also Ear Candling. Done by a skin professional it sounds strange but they put a hollow candle in your ear and it creates a vacuum and all the ick can come out

It is true that using Q-tips incorrectly can push whatever wax you have - into your ear further. I did this once at 19, and plugged up my one ear (very uncomfortable). I had to go to my M.D.'s office to have this corrected. He put me into something like a barber's chair with a big bib over me. Then, he ran hot water into the ear with a needle nose spray. Soon, the wax came out onto my shoulder. What a great feeling. Now, I just periodically let the hot spray go into my ears during a shower about once a month. I just stand there for about 5 minutes and it seems to keep wax build up from happening.

In nursing school I've wiped up shit, vomit, helped pack disgustingly deep ulcers, you name it. Doesn't phase me. Ear wax though - if I even see someone picking their ear I want to hurl icon_lol.gif

Not an expert, but I'm pretty sure that's a discredited technique.

A little hydrogen peroxide in the ear can help to fizz away the wax and loosen anything that is impacted. Put a few drops of low concentration solution in, tilt your head, and leave it that way for up to 20 minutes while it does its work. Then tilt your head up, let it run out into a cotton ball or tissue, and clean up your outer ear with a damp cloth. You may have to do this a few times.

Swimming laps regularly keeps ears squeaky clean icon_biggrin.gif

A good friend recently went to the ear clinic to get a cleaning, but it was so bad they sent him to the hospital. The hospital used forceps to remove the gunk. YUK!! icon_sad.gif

holy fuck. the only thing that goes into your ears is your elbow. i cant even tell you how many people i see a week with ears fucked up 10 ways to sunday cuz they put ANYTHING AT ALL in their ears. no. stop. warm water in the shower or debrox when assessed by a medical professional and found to be necessary. dont put hydrogen peroxide in your ears.
the only reason i can think you might have an elevated t cell count is because you already have ear wax then you go and fuck around with your ear and get some shitty infection..cuz the number one cause of ottitis externa is people fucking around with their ears. or you just arent taking care of yourself and those are 2 symptoms of that. i doubt elevated t cells would cause ear wax. that makes no sense at all but i dont know fuckall about t cells.
i cant even tell you how much i fucking hate ears. every single god damn marine and sailor on the planet feels the need to stick things in their ears.

^ I don't doubt your experience, but no one is suggesting that we root around in there with qtips. Even the Mayo Clinic says that cleaning with baby oil, mineral oil, glycerin or hydrogen peroxide and warm water is fine.

Have we really reached the stage where we have to visit a medical professional for a little bit of earwax? As the Mayo Clinic says, "if your symptoms don't improve after a few treatments, see your doctor."

I actually find the opposite to be true...the chlorine causes dryness in the ear, resulting in extra wax production. But maybe that's just me. Hydrogen peroxide and warm to hot water in the ear typically work for me. Also had the doc do the syringe thing mentioned earlier to much success.

i would say that anyone who cant control ear wax has an issue with either hygiene or something more serious that needs to be seen. your ears regulate the amount of wax necessary to be there. i mean...the shit inside your ear is kinda important! i wouldn't be pouring anything in there. trust and fucking believe i dont want anyone coming to see doc for ear wax either but if the alternate is sticking shit in your ear as a medical professional (sure as fuck not a doctor just a corpsman) i could never ever ever ever advise that. unless i hate you.

First of all, your quote about sailors and marines sticking stuff in their ears cracked me up...

But you aren't saying cleaning your ears out is a bad thing, right? I mean, at least once a week (give or take) I take Qtips and dip them in alcohol and clean the shit out. Not every day, but regularly. That is healthy, right?

i cant tell if you are joking or not. just turn your head in the shower and little some warm water get in there and then do the other side. in reality most of the wax doesnt even touch the area where the qtip can reach. theres this curette kinda thing you can use but not on yourself and most def not by someone who doesnt know what they are doing.
i promise you, if you fuck with your ears too much really bad shit will happen.

I wasnt joking... I really wanted to hear your opinion since it seemed medical and you would give me good advice. I clean my ears like that because as a little boy my mom told me to... I dont have any data one way or the other. I have never heard anyone say that bad stuff happens if you clean your ears too harshly, but I can believe it.

Very strange, but I have been taking my meds again for the past few months and over the last few weeks it has gotten better. It was incredibly dry and itchy when my t-cells were low. I just wish the doctor recognized this as being something HIV related because I have never had the problem during any other time and only find it comes and goes when my t-cells are low.

You're really not supposed to because you can rupture your ear drum if you go too far in, but I do anyway. They say you're supposed to use a tissue and clean them with you're finger.

what would you get out of your doc agreeing it was HIV related?

a ruptured tympanic membrane is a bad day. when you get fluid oozing out of your ear and your hearing is gone and your face is completely numb you will probably wish you didnt do that. also...i dont even get it. you want someone to wrap a tissue around their finger and stick it in their ear? thats the worst idea ever. like...i dont even get how that would work. and if it did work...like if you were able to stick your finger in your ear. holy shit.
