The airline went tit's up because they over paid when they bought a new Zealand airline and used Ansett to hide costs in terms of fuel and maintenance to make the New Zealand airline seem more profitable and like a good investment and boost share price.

Meanwhile an older fuel inefficient Ansett fleet was left to rot while the cash was funneled away, they eventually developed a serious safety issues which Qantas the worlds best safety record airline was happen to turn into a PR disaster when half of Ansett's jets were grounded.

Yeah I know, I was being facetious. Poor Ansett, around a gazillion years only to go under in a matter of a couple of years due to some bad Management. 9/11 delivered the knockout blow.
