Thanks for this. Interesting that in <Batman and Robin, Chris O'Donnell's portrayal of Robin appeared much more 'campy' many of us felt that the director, Joel Schumacher, was making a case for Robin's sexuality. His interactions with Alicia Silverstone felt very 'sibling rivalry' as opposed to 'male courting.'

    Thoughts?

I think the bottom line is that we see what we want to see. Surely, there were likely some writers and artists in the comic book industry who were homosexual, however latent, who threw in the occasional suggestive passage fully aware of what they were doing. However, there was a lot of ambiguity with the Batman and Robin story from the very beginning.

Lots of unanswered question remain, which fuels the interest for the series. So, I think there were young gay guys out there over the decades totally convinced that Batman was indeed gay simply because they wanted to believe it. It was probably the best role model available to the very closeted and confused gay population that existed in the last century.

Even as a little squirt I thought the whole Batman and Robin relationship was well "queer", as in different. I really hated the TV show though. If hatred of that campy crap couldn't straigten me out then nothing could!icon_biggrin.gif

As an avid reader of detective fiction I can think of a few male detectives that were bachelors with male sidekicks. Besides the obvious one of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, there was Hercule Poirot and Captain Hastings (Agatha Christie), Nero Wolfe and Archie Goodwin (Rex Stout), and Philo Vance and S.S. Van Dine (S.S. Van Dine). Ellery Queen never married but did not have a male companion.

My conclusion is that most straight males would rather spend quality time doing male things with their best buddies, then spend time with the so-called "fairer" sex!

btw, (a little off topic) is it true that the x-men 'mutant' thing is an analogy to homosexuality??
    I heard that once.

Yes, it's true, but GLBT people are but ONE group that mutants represent in the "real world" -- although there are X-characters who are openly gay (Northstar, Anole), lesbian (Karma), and bisexual (at least one of Multiple Man's duplicates, as well as villians Mystique & Destiny -- who were lovers, and were originally planned to be Nightcrawler's parents, but the thought of Mystique shapeshifting into a man to impregnate Destiny was too controversial at the time), as well as characters whose sexuality is unclear (such as the relationship between Shatterstar & Rictor). Former Marvel Editor-In-Chief Jim Shooter would not allow gay characters in comics, so any homosexuality could only be IMPLIED. That policy however has since changed.

Furthermore, the Legacy Virus (a disease which originally only affected mutants, but then later began to affect "normal" people") was analogous to HIV/AIDS.

Check out this article towards the bottom for more details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X-men

What about Ernie and Bert from Sesame Street. Two old poofs living together. No wives or girlfriends, and they sleep in the same room.

    Such smut on children's TV.

You're not alone, xanadude. I understood everything you wrote about. At least now people come to me asking questions after they've seen the most recent superhero movie.

An interesting article. I never would have guessed, only because I never read the comics.
However later on when I was a teen, I often heard from those that did read the comics that Robin was gay but never heard much accusation that Batman was/is gay.

    Nice find!icon_biggrin.gif
