Back when I wanted a roommate, I found 3 great roommates over the course of about 6 years via the Craigslist roommate section. Granted, you have to be really careful because you can attract some crazies, but the beauty of it is that you can do a lot of pre-screening via email before you ever give out your phone number or agree to meet the person. All 3 that I met were great roommates, quality guys, and people I am still friends with to this day.

This answer will also satisfy the "How do you find a date" and "I'm looking for a second hand couch" threads.

I didn't really get a choice in my roommates - they were sort of just thrust upon me :-/

It can also can be used for that second chance with "I should have talked to that cute guy at the club/sexy barista at Starbucks/hot guy in my class, but I was too shy" threads.

If you work at a large company with an on-line bulletin board, you can post for a roommate there. I used the company bulletin board at Hewlett-Packard (an actual board back then) to find some good roommates. One good thing - - you know where they work!

I've never found one on roommates.com, only craigslist. I truly believe roommates.com seeds their database with "potential" matches to try to make you pay. Don't waste your time with them.

Now, as far as craigslist, you'll get responses. But be very upfront in your listing. If you want a non-smoker, be explicit. Like "By non-smoker I don't mean that you only smoke outside. I mean you NEVER smoke at all."

I've tried Craigslist and Easyroomate. Both I haven't had much luck in. I need one by September so I might have to settle. icon_neutral.gif
