Some bad news on the gay marriage issue in Washington state. Although the state legislature voted in favor of same sex marriage, opponents such as the r.c. church and evangelicals, have gathered 241,000 signatures for a referendum to be voted on by the people in the next election; only 120,577 signatures were needed to qualify for the ballot. Whenever there has been a vote to allow gay marriage in every state, we have lost. Although statistics and polls indicate that nearly 50 percent of the state's people favor gay marriage, not all of them vote; and some of them are just not that committed to the issue. Sadly, we might have to wait a few more years when there are more younger voters who favor same sex marriage to cancel out the conservative older ones.

Or could just wait for the Supreme Court's ruling in the California case next year. icon_wink.gif

Justice Kennedy is the guy we need to swing this. He already overturned the sodomy laws years ago.

A "friend" of mine moved to WA this past year and posted all over FB that he was going to do all he could to prevent gay marriage. Needless to say, I unfriended him as I realized he wasn't a true friend.

Totally expected. In fact, some gay people signed, with the idea of getting it on the ballot so we can WIN the election and put all the anti-equality business to an end.

Please support HRC Washington, march in the Pride parade with the Episcopal churches (over 25, so far), talk to people, and GET OUT THE VOTE!

Polling on issues like this are always often in favor of the 'oppressed'... since people do not want to seem bigoted when they respond to the question to the polling person, but when in the privacy of a voting booth, they often vote other ways. This is one of the reasons why you see Polling Numbers on social issues swing wildly from the results.
