Tel aviv is the number one spot on my places to visit list! Never mind that the IDF is a horrible entity that is probably guilty of war crimes. They're still sexy as all hell!!!

Not directly related to the thread but this is a nice movie about a gay Israeli reserve soldier who meets a Palestinian guy

The link works, but apparently RJ doesn't like links with parens.

Where to begin? Should I start with the reflexive antiwar posturing while enjoying "war-related" freedoms, such as the freedom to be obsequiously oblivious onine? Or should I start with the shallowness of seeing in this thread only the hotness of soldiers?

What to do, what to do...

You're welcome. I really liked the movie. It's in Hebrew with English subtitles. It doesn't detract and the scenery is excellent.

The truth is, outside of cities like Tel Aviv, Israel is NOT very friendly to gays. Israel has a powerful ultra-Orthodox fundamentalist movement that wants to make Israel into a theocracy. In fact, there is already a theocratic aspect to the state of Israel in the fact that all marriages performed within Israel have to be approved by the ultra-Orthodox authorities to be legal. There is no civil marriage in Israel, and anyone who wants to be legally married, must travel outside the country and get married in another country, and then request for their foreign marriage to be recognized by the state.

    Let it go?

Seeing as how you have no idea how well-thought-out or deeply-held his belief system is ("reflexive" and "posturing" are just your guesses/name-calling) and seeing as how there were some replies above yours dealing with politics and civil rights and thus the thread isn't about "only the hotness of soldiers", I'd look for a better target, IMHO.

I believe there was an event on my campus recently about this. It's a pretty contentious debate to be had, but the general claim is about "pinkwashing" - that is, dishonestly blowing up LGBT rights in order to distract from other horrors going around the country.

Basically, I wouldn't believe everything you see or hear. The United States looks plenty liberal walking through any urban area, but the other vast portions of the country paint an entirely different picture.

there was never a better example of gay israeli military beef than Dror Barak, aka Roman Ragazzi (porn name)

    tumblr_lil0izl6471qbo6lto1_500.jpg

he was a real life military trainer, worked at the israeli consulate, who then lost his UN job for being outed for doing gay porn. Their military has always been open to gays but i guess they're not keen when you have porn on your CV. Sadly he suffered from depression and took his own life earlier this year. I guess being that devastatingly beautiful is a heavy cross to bear.

    http://www.out.com/entertainment/popnography/2012/02/27/roman-ragazzi-dror-barak-dead-apparent-suicide

he was a hot porn performer, always seemed really into it, not just phoning it in. such a waste,

Probably not guilty of "war crimes".

Judge Goldstone recants: new evidence/data "indicate that civilians were NOT intentionally targeted" by Israel.
    Unlike by Hamas.

LIL'AIPAC, (W4) your such a F'ing predictable propagandist. Perhaps you should take another look at the long list of Palestinian children shot throuth the head by IDF soldiers while playing, I know you like to repeat the propaganda that a Palestinian at 12 is a terrorist, but sorry >>>>

FACTS HAVE IT ON THE SITE :"IF AMERICANS NEW" Lists about 1500 Palestinian Children mostly under the age of 12, many of whom were shot in the head by IDF snipers.

One of our members mother was shot in this fashion.

Just today on your Israeli News Paper HAARETZ NEWS had a story about an IDF soldier fired for shooting live ammo at peaceful Palestinian protestors,

You Mentioned Goldstone backed off some because of intense pressure, and if you read his statements closely he did not totally recant what in the eyes of the international community put a huge scarr on their view of Israel. Your defense of that is nothing short of a shocking lie filled propaganda to cover up the truth. Your ilk certainly haven't convinced the the International community that the many deaths in Gaza were anything short of an Israeli Atrocity,

As for trying to blame Hamas, do you remember that Hamas was the creation of Israel and the US ? It was to discredit and draw away from the PLO. Do you remember the discredited "OPERATION CAST LEAD" in GAZA ? Israel's IDF is still paying for those attrocities which discredited them and Israel both.

WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO SHOOT ANY MORE HOLES IN YOUR GODAMNED PROPAGANDA ? I read several Israeli News Sites, Have you read Haaretz news on these topics I bring up ? they sure don't agree with your propaganda buddy.

By the way, look up the articles about "PINKWASHING" TO COVER UP ISRAELI ATROCITIES. Makes allowing some gay rights a real SHAM in light of how badly the Israeli Occupation and Settlement theft of Palestinians homes lands and farms is going.

But don't reveal any facts, because LIL'AIPAC says thats ANTI JEW. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> NOT !!!!

Everything you say is right, but is almost more misleading than accurate.

One could similarly say that outside of NYC the State of NY is "not very friendly to gays". The same is true in the Netherlands and other countries often considered to be top shelf when it comes to gay rights.

That further misses the point that 2/3rds of Israel's population lives in the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Another sizeable percentage in liberal Haifa and Beer Sheva. Perhaps Israel is 2nd to Canada in percentage of population that lives in a gay friendly area of the country.

More importantly, all gays have legal protections at a level not found even in the USA.
And support is there in the political echelons with the exception of some small far-right Jewish parties (and perhaps some far-left Arab parties).
Yet even those have unequivocally denounced anti-gay violence.

Israel inherited from the British a system where family law (including marriage) was goverend by the religious establishments (Jewish, Muslim, Christian and others). The absence of civil marriage is bad and is being worked on. It's just a matter of time and it is likely that gay marriages will be built it.

As you note, however, Israel does recognize marriages performed outside the country, including gay marriages (again putting Israel ahead of the USA). Furthermore, within Israel, gay couples have been recognized under common-law marriages.
