I went to high school with this kid. Saw him around all the time but never talked to him. He looks EXACTLY the same too. Seems like he is doing well in life, good for him!

He also made a very impressive comeback after 8 months out of competition from a pretty bad foot injury! He made a few errors, but I was glad to see him back and do so well at this past weekend's US Championships. Surely he's one of the leading candidates for the Olympic team.

Fortunately I'll get to see him at Olympic Trials in San Jose at the end of this month!

BTW, that first pic below the video is not JHo; it's Chris Brooks.

Nope, happily married to a lady (a former OU gymnast herself).

However, some of his tweets make me believe he loves God more than he loves his wife, heh.

God is always depicted as a male.

He was so close to defending his national title! But I'm glad John Orozco won (more talented and well balanced).

NBC did a fluff piece on him and his family during the US Championships. The NBC commentators could not reiterate enough that he was from Cuba. They seem convinced he's Cuban rather than American icon_rolleyes.gif

I absolutely cracked up over hearing his stepfather/coach say: "Tú eres el mejor, coño!" after one of Danell's routines during nationals! LOL!

The countdown/showdown is on: Battle for the Golds.

China vs. Japan vs. USA and maybe Russia?

As a team, the US won bronze last Olympics in China. I hope they will do better this time.

I love watching Men's Gymnastics at the Summer Olympics. Well that and Men's Diving Events. Skinny cute tall guys in Speedo twisting/flipping at the pool. icon_cool.gificon_biggrin.gif

I wonder how it's going to be for JHo to be a team player rather one of the top all-arounders this time around? He was the top US gymnast for quite a while and has since been surpassed by quite a few guys. Danell Leyva and John Orozco will no doubt be to the two to qualify to the all-around final in London barring disaster, but I hope JHo's ready for a change in his role.

The bronze medal is wide open to a bunch of different teams. I'd say the main contenders should be USA, Russia, Germany, South Korea, and possibly Ukraine. However, it's always possible that Japan and China can make mistakes for USA to slip in.

Basically it'll come down to which team survives pommel horse!

I was glad to see John Orozco win the national title -- and he did just barely. He did an interview last week with Piers Morgan on CNN and what an incredible young man. I will be rooting for him in the Olympics

Just barely indeed. His reaction when he found out he won was priceless! But it's unbelievable how damn talented he is especially at such a young age!

He surely has the potential to match or even beat the accomplishments of Paul Hamm over the next few years heading to Rio.

You know another thing I wonder about the sport is - you rarely see a Latino or Black Male gymnast in the sport, just East Asians vs. US vs. Euro dudes. Why is that?

It is also the same in Swimming, Diving Events. I know there are exceptions but still. icon_cool.gif

All three age groups (Jr Elite: 14-15 & 16-18 and Sr Elite) of the national title were won by black guys. How impressive is that? I've never seen that happen before!

There have been some other prominent black and Latino gymnasts on the US team in the past.

Brazil is basically the only Latin American country that is competitive in the sport because they have all the resources to excel. Cuba used to be an interesting team during the '80s and early '90s.

There are a few single standouts from Chile, Mexico, and Puerto Rico as well.

Morgan Hamm retired after he withdrew from the Beijing team. He's married and working now.

As for Paul, he trained off and on at Ohio State, Swiss Turners (his old gym), and USOTC. He got into some legal trouble along the way (hilarious story!), which delayed some of his training and caused him to lose his assistant coach position at Ohio State. Then he made a shitty comeback at this year's Winter Cup and announced his retirement a couple months ago. Since then he's been working somewhat as an assistant coach/mentor for the national team, although I have no idea he does in that exactly.
