The law in Canada prohibits physicians assisting patients to end their life, even/especially those who can’t do it themselves. Popular voting has shown that in these cases, 70% of the population feels that it should be legalized, as long as certain groups are protected.

I started giving to charities for almost a year now to support the cause of legalizing assisted suicide because there’s no cause I believe in more. There’s nothing worse in my eyes than ending up with a wretched life, devoid of joy and with constant pain and not being able to get yourself out of it.

There has been a Supreme Court case in BC contesting that this law is constitutional. It seemed like something that would get resolved in late 2012 but it was just decided yesterday that the law is unconstitutional!!

It’s similar to the Sue Rodriguez case from 20 years ago which barely failed. The decision now is to toss out the current law in one year’s time so that the gov’t can write a new one, including all the safeguards and regulations needed, much like they have in Oregon and The Netherlands. It will probably be brought to the Supreme Court of Canada (not just BC) to be battled for the same rights for all Canadians instead of just BC.

It’s great news for so many people who will get diseases that will make their life a slow decline into torture. They can have a peaceful, merciful, painless death when they’re ready, if they choose to. While it can’t help someone like my dementia-addled grandma, who doesn’t legally have sound mind anymore (although it’s something she would have wanted before she got this ill), it is a precious option for many. I’m not sure yet if it will include what are called Advanced Care Directives, which is like a questionnaire which you get notarized, where you specify in which situations you would want to be euthanized (if you couldn’t manage personal care, if you couldn’t speak, if you could speak but were paralyzed etc). These are done while you have sound mind, to give permission in advance to let someone end your life if it gets to a certain point or in case of tragedy. If so, it could be the end of fates like my grandma’s for anyone who chooses it.

So so so so so so so so so so HAPPEE! It was a matter of time but times are finally a-changin'! Thanks to Oregon and the countries that have this process legalized already for setting some precedent to give the case some weight. The woman with ALS who led the charge in the case, as well as any who can't wait a year for the law to change get exemptions and will be granted their conditional request for assisted death.

TL;DR - A whole bunch of people were saved from years of pain, indignity and sadness yesterday. Drinks are on me!icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I agree with you on this. We treat our pets with more dignity when they are suffering than we are able to treat our own family members. People should have the right to choose assisted suicide and die painlessly and with dignity rather than suffer and be a burden to others.

I'm in such a good mood, I'll even buy drinks for people who argue! Maybe they'll loosen up and make out while I fap.
    One pomegranate martini for TropicalMark!

SouthBeach, "grandmothersinlove" are too busy imperializing into the affairs of the US to give a damn about their own country.

Hmmm...I disagree with this comparison. Too many people euthanize pets for the most frivolous of reasons. As well, some of the disasters that less than stellar vets manage to perform when euthanizing are rather appalling. Let's hope people are treated better than that.
