This is Real Jock, so when i signed up i pretty much knew the musical taste of the guys on the site would be more geared to pop. For me, I live for music.. and the weirder the better. I thought i would open up a thread to get a feel for if there were guys here who:

    a)Enjoy German Prog rock.
b)Know what Drone is and actually sounds like.
    c) would say they listen to Modern Classical.
    d) Know Raster Noton is
e)Your friends call your musical taste pretentious.
    f) You live for Laurie Andersons Big Science.
g)You put on Autechre for "thinking music"
h)You know and love inuit throat signing music.
I)You compare Oneohtrix Point Nevers Replicas was one of you top favorite albums of last year... but not better than Colin Stetsons Judges.

    i could go on...

So anyhow... this thread is basically to talk about "weird" you don't find weird, that you actually love.

Can you be a jock...and artsy music snob/geek?

also.. i have a group on facebook which mostly comprises of gay men who are into "Difficult Music"...

oh... duh! haha. Yes that was a joke. There's no instrumental music to 4'33". it's a "statement" performance. All concept. The sounds of the room and "your consciousness"/ Perception is the "music". I love shit like that.

    Lady Gaga should cover it.

MuchoMasQueMusculo said^ Dang, that is really annoying. Sorry but all of this has been really fucked up. I don't consider any of this to be music. They're just erratic sounds chaotically arranged. The Litanies of Satan sounds like an exorcism.

I'm not a big pop fan and I do appreciate creativity and uniqueness but this is not art to me.

    duh. it is an exorcism.

Not sure what you mean by difficult music, but I like songs that usually people have never even heard of.

    An example

That said doesn't mean I don't like the usual pop songs. People call me taste in music a bit odd but not pretentious.

I'm a big fan of indie/alternative, so I suppose you could lump me into that group.

    @JackKash-
you have smittened me even more. I love mathrock and lots of progressive indie folk stuff.
I'm currently listening to Chic Gamine. They can be poppy- but they have over reaching folk/soul influences and bare bones instrumentation. They perform live with only voices and percussion. Its brilliant.
I also love middle eastern influenced rock.
I also got into listening to music with chinese tones and scales because it is haunting...

I've always loved this work, though I prefer the world premiere recording from 1968 (hopelessly out of print), with the composer conducting the New York Philharmonic and the Swingle Singers. Love the cacophony of it.

This is a "music video" version of a mix tape i made for the facebook group i mod, Difficult Listening hour. It's comprised of Electronic, Glitch, ,modern classical, electronic hybrid, Academia shit is lumped into the "difficult music" heading. Difficult Music is just an umbrella termed borrowed from a movement of the 60's into 80's which culminated in a long running radio show that covers "art music" or Music for arts sake. Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, Karlhienz Stockhausen... and the ilk.

I grew up listening to "alternative rock"... when that got boring and became lame around mid 2000's.. i just decided to dig harder and find the music that inspired my favorite more mainstream artists.. like Radiohead.
