OK, I have a new pet peeve, one that my handsome Dave also shares. In the past week, air quality at the gym has been poor. It's not really about the facility so much as our fellow members. Some of them have the most god-awful hygiene... and they reek of BO. Not just a little... there are veritable clouds of stench emanating from these guys. icon_eek.gif

Does anyone else encounter the same issue? Do you say anything to these guys, and is that effective for getting them to change their ways?

A little at my wits end, so this thread is in part just to vent. But I'd also love to hear any advice that guys who have successfully dealt with this.

Seriously, some days I'd just like the arbitrary power to force these guys into a vat of 4% chlorhexidine skin detergent.... icon_evil.gif

Can you ask the staff if they will look into it, with the hope they'll say something to the offenders? Do you & Dave attend at the same time? Maybe have a conversation between you about the awful smells, loud enough to be overheard, but singling no one out.

Just walk up to them, tell them you think they're hot and would love to fuck them, but they'd have to shower first...a few times.

There's something worse than most BO cases. People who don't brush their teeth doing cardio and breathing out a dark cloud of nastiness.

I'd move(only thing worse is a loud cellphone conversation) except I don't want to lose my calories on the dial.

Up here in Seattle, temps rarely break 70 in June. Maybe that helps the BO part.

    Summer has begun!
I find the same thing on the buses. Except you have to sit next to people sometimes and you don't always know until you're sitting down, with your arm sweatglued to theirs that they stink.

I try for times of day when it hasn't gotten hot yet and is closer to when people have likely showered.

There was a kid that came into the gym a couple of Fridays ago smelling like bathed himself in movie theatre popcorn. I felt like I was standing at the AMC concession stand/ It was pretty awful. Between that guy and the dudes that feel it's acceptable to not wear deodorant before hitting the gym, I've become pretty intolerant of certain things.

Another gym pet peeve...those that don't put the weights back where they belong once they're finished.

    Blech…that's nasty.

My impression of the gym lately is that there are way too many people out there that don't wipe their asses sufficiently. The smell of ass has been pretty prevalent lately and knowing I'm sharing benches and machines with these people makes me want to gag. I might start bringing my own anti-bacterial spray.

Drop to your knees, tell him how much his manly unwashed body turns you on and beg to lick his sweaty pits. He will be smelling like roses next time you see him, guaranteed. Unless of course he's gay (and a pig).

Never had the issue and it's a personal consideration with these people.
I'd just try and avoid working out in the same vicinity.. go to the other side of the gym or work out at a different time.

There was this one guy who smelled like death at my University gym a few years ago. And he always smelled like death. DEATH. Probably the worst smelling person I have ever encountered, it's BURNED Into my memory.

    DEATH.

For me there's really only one other option... tell them they stink and to do something about it ......

Upside: You are telling them there is a problem and they need to fix it.

Downside: You may get told off or have a gym scene.... and they will probably hate your guts from this point forward....

At my gym here in Texas. BO doesn't seem to be the problem. Gyms here can't get away with being cheap on the air conditioning. My gym have dealt with the few that smell consistantly bad.

There are a few guys and girls who are so concerned with their smell that they BATHE in perfume and cologne.

There is this one guy who has forced me off the cardio crosstrainer by going to the one next to me. I can't breathe because of his cologne.

I feel your pain...there is this one guy that majorly sticks out from my gym...and it's not just a slightly unpleasant odor, it's massively sickening. You can smell him before you even see him, and I am not joking here, nor am I being over-dramatic...but there have been a couple of instances where I have literally dry-gagged from how horrendous it is.

We had a guy like that at my gym here in Boston. I couldn't be within 20 feet of him without smelling the stench that emanated from his body. At first I thought I had a sensitive nose or something, but then my trainer confirmed it. It was almost funny to see the looks on peoples' faces when he would walk near them and the smell made it to their noses...instant horror. The sad thing was he was working out with another trainer most days, and the trainer refused to say anything to the guy, despite the pleadings of his fellow trainers. I think management finally stepped in and did something, because when I see him now, I don't smell him first, lol.

If you bathe regularly, wear clean clothes and deodorant you could work out 20 hours straight and I wouldn't mind how you smell at the gym. If you smell like decomposing flesh to the degree my body wants to throw up the contents of my stomach something is wrong and it's not about being delicate.

Quoted for truth* I shower-deoderize before going to the gym, and after.

Bring a clothespin to the gym next time.
When you're offended, put the clothespin on your nose.

It's the gym, and people are supposed to sweat. Go somewhere else to play canasta.
As long as they towel off the equipment after they use it, it's not really a major problem.

The problem is (and I almost did it half an hour ago) is you can't avoid a shower after you work out. You'll stick to the furniture.

But, you can talk yourself out of taking the first shower of the day before a gym visit. If they have "bed head"... I'd take that as a warning.

If you're lucky, they brushed their teeth.

Oh, that's the other pet peeve. So many peeps at our gym DON'T wipe-down the equipment... grrrr...
