Obama’s new fun-raising pitch; Give me your wedding presents

President Barack Obama is so short of campaign cash that he’s asking for a percentage of your wedding, birthday and anniversary gifts — but the visitors to his fundraising site are leaving contempt, jibes and scorn, plus a few declarations of embarrassment.

“Is this what the office of the president of the United States has come to? Pandering for wedding and birthday money?” read a post by Richard Henkle. “Who is his campaign manager? Mel Brooks? This is better than ‘The Producers,’” wrote Margaret Grimm Blakckwell.

“Wow… not sure my young son will be too happy about giving up his birthday presents for BO to spend it all on celeb parties,” wrote someone under the name j1. “Reminds me of the scene from the Grinch where he’s shoving the Christmas tree up the chimney.”

“I must visit the dentist today, do they want the Tooth Fairy money too?

These people have gone over the top…could we have the election moved up and get it over with,” wrote David Kennedy. “Enough is enough!” A few commentators seemed to be Democrats, and professed embarrassment. “This is very wrong,” said a commenter named James Kendall. “Obama should be notified of this and if he supports it — he has lost my support… Whoever came up with this idea and approved it should be fired.”

“Please take this embarrassment down as soon as posible,” said a Frank Brown. “Please… from someone who used to be proud he grew up with a Democrat mother and Republican father… now I am ashamed my family was ever associated with the Democrats.

“My mother has voted Democrat since 1960,” said a commenter named Big Bear. “This year she won’t.”

Obama’s campaign likely will take down the page soon, especially if it spurs visitors to donate to Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney. “Thanks for giving me the push I needed to donate to the Romney campaign!” said Tom Site.

The gift-grab was posted on Obama’s website on Thursday. The pitch reads:
Got a birthday, anniversary, or wedding coming up? Let your friends know how important this election is to you — register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation in lieu of a gift. It’s a great way to support the President on your big day. Plus, it’s a gift that we can all appreciate—and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl.

Forget “we want your presence, not your presents,” the Obama campaign has a different take on tasteful this election season.

On Thursday the Obama-Biden re-election blog debuted a new option for supporters to help raise campaign cash.

“Got a birthday, anniversary, or wedding coming up?” the post asks. “Let your friends know how important this election is to you — register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation in lieu of a gift. It’s a great way to support the President on your big day. Plus, it’s a gift that we can all appreciate—and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl.”

The registry page allows supporters to register any kind of event — the one major caveat, The Daily Caller learned while registering, is that all events must have donation goal of $50 or more. Once registered an event page explains to potential party attendees why Obama is somehow a part of the upcoming birthday, bar mitzvah or block party.

“For my big day, I’d like to show my support for a cause I believe in — re-electing President Obama,” the default event page explains. “That’s why I’m asking my friends and family to donate to the Obama campaign. Thanks for chipping in!”

According to an event confirmation email, the money raised from the registry will help finance campaign organizers and volunteers.

“Thank you for showing your support, and asking your friends and family to give to this campaign,” Obama campaign deputy manager Julianna Smoot’s form letter read. “By requesting a donation in lieu of a typical gift, you’re helping make sure Obama 2012 organizers and volunteers have the clipboards, pamphlets, and gas money they need to get the word out about the choice we have to make in November. And you’re saving your guests the hassle of curling a ribbon or guessing your size.”

5 year old Johnny was really looking forward to that toy truck for his birthday. But he didn't get it. Instead the money went to Obama. Johnny was so proud that the money was going to help America to ensure his future.

So honored to contribute. I know Hun will not mind not getting an anniversary gift, knowing instead the money is going to pay for some of the golf balls Obama needs. He had to stop using taxpayer money for that before those dirty Republicans started to investigate, so happy to fill in.

My birthday money is going to Barack. Could I designate it for a Vacation Fund? After Barack is out of office next January and can no longer have the tax payer fund his vacations, I know he, Michelle, and the kids will want to vacation as they have become accustomed to. Thanks.

In lieu of traditional anniversary gifts, I'm going to give my dear wife, Lyudmila Putina, a certificate that I have contributed to your campaign. I really want you to win because you are very "flexible" and easy to work with. Your pal, Vladimir Putin, but you can call me Vlada.

    Wow, lie much?

This is no different than people who set up a registry asking, instead of a gift, for people to make a donation to a foundation, a charity, etc. It's not saying or inferring you hand over gifts you recieved, or that you are planning to give to someone else, like a child. icon_lol.gif

    Here's an example:

    Don't be dense SB.
Socal has inferred that instead of a giving a gift to a child,or someone else, a person is to gift the campaign instead which is NOT what a registry does, unless the parent of that child sets up a registry, and that's not what is being suggested.

What is being suggested is that if YOU are having a wedding or b-day etc that you can tell others to give to your party instead of you, with a registry.

Don't be dense yourself. Certificates can be used as gifts, with the money going to Obama.

What do you think they have the Registry for? For flat screens from Best Buy?
