(I'm posting this in the tech forum as well because I think it's important.)

Saw this Petition on Change.org. It can be done. They certainly charge high enough prices to pay U.S. workers. I hope you'll sign and put someone to work here. What a difference it could make for our economy.

    http://www.change.org/petitions/apple-make-it-in-america

It's feasibile, and being done by other companies.

In a statement, Mike O'Shaughnessy, president of Element Electronics, said, "This was also an emotional decision for the company, maybe even a patriotic choice. We have watched for years as jobs have left America for other countries. Element Electronics wants to pioneer a resurgence of creating quality manufacturing jobs in the USA." He added, “Element Electronics believes global economic trends will make American production more economically viable over time and the company is scheduled to continue increasing production over the next few years. This will lead to increased job creation within Element Electronic factories and their suppliers.”

No free market, you haven't saved America.

Anyway, build iPhones here and they'd cost $1500.

Rather than all-or-none, maybe some products in USA, some overseas.
A little is better than nothing, that way it won't hurt the consumers so much.

It would be a logistics nightmare to move manufacturing and assembling operations to the States. And it will eat into profits. So shareholders won't be happy. So.. not gonna happen.

It's cheaper for them to have it made in China. It's a lot cheaper in Labor cost, salary and everything else, it's the Yuan/currency vs. the US dollars. Even though I'm in agreement with what the OP's trying to do to boost bring up our economy, I saw a documentary on ABC news a while back that the Chinese workers received like $2/hr to make Apple products. Do you think American workers will be ok with this wage? From a business point of view, I think they would lose a lot of $$$ if they do a drastic change like this. It's mostly corporate greed, Apple is a private company, I don't think the government can force them to do anything that they don't want to. It's a free/capitalist world. The rich get richer, the middle/working class barely can survive. Sad but true.

I was working for apple when then
began to outsource. Steve Jobs wanted to manufacturer here but local, state and federal governments make that so difficult that you just give up.

Apple has never posted a dividend. They bank their
profits they do not distribute them to stockholders.

Notice how many of you are nay-sayers and are against helping the country. Apple already sells their products for WAY too much and are reaping record profits. As said by many, do the right thing and make less, but take pride in rebuilding America.

We don't want to hear your excuses. And if you are a naysayer and a "not gonna happen" person, YOU are the problem with this country.

Looking at this graph it seems not only does China provide cheaper labour than the US, they're about to provide more revenue to Apple as well. Not really sure why Apple would want to insult their best customers.

If tomorrow Apple announced that it was going to bring all main product manufacturing back to the U.S. while still maintaining their prices, I don't think you'd be arguing. They're already saying rising Chinese wages and cost of transport is making it more economical to build in the U.S. for many companies.

So, do the right thing for your country. Sign the damn petition.

I wonder whether the staff at Apple stores can accept tips. Seems like they could use the extra cash.

As of March they actually do pay a dividend. That and regardless of dividends shareholders care about profit margin.

I was going to say...why does it have to happen in America? Why not the UK? Spain? Africa? Australia? Why not share the love?

This isn't a matter of not wanting to bring manufacturing back to the States. It's a matter can't. Logistics, environmental and labor laws, profits, supply chain management.. this is a very complex issue. Patriotism and warm fuzzy feelings won't make it happen.

They are made in China because capitalists want to be able to exploit workers by paying them low wages and making them work in terrible conditions. They want to make billions off the backs of the workers that are paid very little money.

    Why single out Apple?

If you want to do this fairly, make a petition to make it a law that all products sold in the US have to be made in the US. Dont pick on Apple when a ton of other companies do the same thing.

I didn't start the petition. But go ahead, start one for all U.S. companies. Or did you just want to be a prick in saying that?
