i have a mix of a Canadian-English accent (monotone, flattened vowels, dulled consonants, slurred ) and a South-African-English accent (high vowels and hard consonants).

i was born/raised in Canada, so my accent is predominantly Canadian-English. But I spent years living in South Africa, so the SouthAfrican-English comes out in specific expressions and words.

I think this is due to the SA duality in ways of expressing vowels -- e.g. "kit" and "bit" don't rhyme - its more like "keet" and "beht". likewise, my name "Ken" spoken in Canadian-English sounds like "Kan" to the South African ear and if a South African said my name, it would sound like "Keen" to the Canadian ear. the word "building" sounds like "bilding" when spoken by a Canadian, but sounds like "buhlding" when spoken by a South African.

Also SouthAfricanEnglish tends to hit some consonants harder than others, whereas Canadians tend to dull them down and slur them together (e.g. the word "writing" would be spoken "wriding" in Canada, but "wrai-Ting" in South Africa)

I love all the Virginia accents: Tidewater, Piedmont, Richmond, Appalachian. NoVA, each one different and interesting.

What is its range? NoVA, Maryland, southern PA, perhaps Delaware?

+1 Oregonians sound much the same - though we spell things differently.

though, sometimes I like to wear on of my Great Big Sea tshirts and affect a Newfoundland accent, just to freak people out. (or this might be funny if you're from Canada).

Broadcast Midwestern, with a few bits of northern Oklahoma twang that slip through (especially on the syllables "or" and "oi"). However, my accent is very malleable, and tends to adjust itself readily when I travel.

LOL.

Anyway, I speak English with a Guyanese accent (it's a part of the entire Caribbean melange). I never felt weird about it at school because most of my friends international kids so we don't really give a fuck about if you pronounce something differently. However, recently I have been noticing that my all American research group does not understand some words I say.

A combination of Locust Valley lockjaw and Northern California patrician. (The first time I heard my voice on tape after giving a speech, I was a bit shocked that I sound like this).

I was raised in a Jewish household in an Italian neighborhood of the metro-NYC area of Bergen County, Joisey. So, even after more than 30 years away, I still sound like this.

Philadelphian. Most people don't think we have an accent but it's there. It's like a cross of south jersey and gross.

Generally I'm very neutral midwestern, but whenever I spend any time with my dad, or when I'm tired, or have had a few drinks, I slip into a more rural, farm boy redneck-ish sound.
