Ok, ok....so one thing I'm getting really tired of hearing on these internetz is the term "real men". I see it on here, in the blogs, on FB. Usually it is being said by some fat/old/outofshape dude mocking a twink or anyone else who does not have too much body hair or body fat. What is with these guys? What are the qualifiers for being a "real man"?

I understand not everyone likes the same type of guy, but why the need to be critical of those that DO take care of their bodies or choose to be well kept?

Only real men fully grasp the concept of a real man.

Is it like the "real women have curves" thing? The sentiment is nice, but people who say these things usually sound kinda spiteful.

I'd like to think a "real man" has a penis, two testicles, a prostate, and an Adam's apple.

What if one is removed due to health reasons? What if he was only born with one? What if he's one of those rare cases (which there are) where he's born with 3?

Then they're either Lance Armstrong (or Adolf Hitler), or they're a circus freak. ;)

It was expressions like these that had me rolling my eyes as a kid. As a kid. Yet some people as adults cling to these stupid ideas.

I was always resistant to doing things because they were designated Boys Activities. I didn't want to be duped into doing anything I didn't want to do.

Being a "real man" sounds like a sucky, constrained way of life.

Haha that one. I always wondered why that was supposed to encourage someone to do something.

It refers to what an individual perceives as the archetypal male figure. It's a reaction against men who are adopting traits that have long been socially assigned to women.

I've cooked four meals today, jacked off twice, took out the trash, went to work, vacuumed the carpet, worked out for 30+ minutes, washed dishes, and walked the dog five times.

Which one of those are socially assigned to women?

I hope you don't think I believe in the "Real Men" term. I don't use it and I find it stupid. I'm talking about the perspective of those who do use the term.

An example of something they would criticize is manscapping. Women are traditionally known to shave below the neck. Women are also stereotypically seen as being concerned about fashion and obsessing over their physical appearance. Any guy exhibiting these traits is going to be seen, by those who use the "Real Men" term, as less masculine than guys who apparently don't give a darn about their looks. Or if they do care, it's done in a subtle, discreet way.
