The Differences between Encouragement & Motivation and Pseudo-Optimism & Sugared-Reality

I was typing another thread (I'll post later), and I wrote a pre-statement that I thought should be discussed.

    - Can you tell the difference between someone that's really trying to encourage you and someone that's faking it?
    - Better yet, can you tell when someone is trying a bit too hard to be motivational and it just doesn't go anywhere?
    - What tips you off to a faker?

When someone is being honestly encouraging/motivational, it strikes a chord with me. It's something that gives me something to consider and a little fuel to keep running. The fakers statements just give me this sense of "I don't really care, you asked, here's an (arbitrary/generic) answer..."

I know we support each other as a (sometimes silly but) real gay community online. I haven't come across another website yet with this kind of family feel to it.
