I don't understand why this debate is so visceral in the US. You already spend a vast amount on healthcare, but not very efficiently (medicare, medicaid). Yet the Obamacare system is presented as some kind of semi-communist imprisonment measure. I don't see it myself. I work with this sector, so I am fairly close to the market here.

Humm...for those of us old enough to remember...the large tax increases under Reagan and Bush 1. (Even the Cato institute admits that under Reagan, taxes increased...read Assessing the Reagan years.) The Reagan tax increases primarily hit the middle and lower classes, the Bush increases, the middle class and to some extent, the wealthy.

So if the hero of conservatives raised taxes, all of a sudden its a sin?

Smoking and drinking are already taxed (Clinton's 'Sin Tax').

drinking is a Clinton tax? Oh please, please study American history. Under President Washington, the tax on booze was imposed in 1794. Again, in 1794, tobacco was taxed. To collect the tax, during the Whiskey Rebellion, President Washington lead Federal troops to collect it - the only sitting president to physically lead troops into a conflict. (Well potential, the rebellion fizzled when Washington and the troops appeared.)

Until the income tax came along, the tax on liquor was a major source of revenue for the govt.

For details read the book "The liquor tax in the United States, 1791-1947"

Tobacco tax a Clinton tax? When Reagan was Governor of California, he oversaw the tripling of the excise tax on tobacco and as President agreed to its extension. But again, it was under President Washington that tobacco was first taxed.
