I haved been to the Castro , i would say developed a love and hate relationship lol. but seems im not the only one. I'm torn between Weho and Castro, both good , each offers a different icon_eek.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gificon_redface.gif on the plate.icon_wink.gif
Folsom street fair is always a blast, over all. I would say Weho and Castro .................................

Weho 60 % love the gay scene

Castro 40 % love the gay scene

Gay bars i like the one's in SF called The Cafe, Badlands, Toad Hall

Gay bars i like in Weho " The Abbey "

They are both wonderful gay cities/areas to explore/live. SF has a more compacted, older, more leather, older, professional gay bears! LA has a younger professional crowd in general. I lived in both cities in the past and enjoyed both. The Abbey btw turns out to be a very mixed crowd now, a lot of women here on the weekend. SF bars/clubs like the Cafe, Toad Hall and Badlands are usually smaller, denser and maybe have less people comparing to some of the clubs here in LA. I live in the suburbs now and am close to West Hollywood. Overall, I love both places but I like LA just a bit more because of the weather, younger guys, the beach and the close proximity to my family.

The Castro smaller. . . and a little more Wackified. I made that word up. SF period is broken up into all these spots and Castro merely supports a more mainstreamy all in one vision of what gay nightlife is.. and the thing is though...it's more divey and requires less privilage to enter than LA..which is more elitist to me. Elitist because it's a car city in comparison to SF's boiling pot.

SF night life is life support too.

I have more fun in Polk and Soma and at house parties and special nights than Badlands or Toad Hall. You'll find me at 440 before Badlands.

i worked in a Castro Store for awhile and lived in the anus of it all... and i just hated how small and concentrated it is. West Hollywood has more...breath...

The Castro is unique in that it offers so many places to go. Many of the places are 'home' to a specific group of guys (mostly) and a few are very mixed crowds but all tend to be fun. In addition, you have some very good restaurants, apparel stores, novelty stores and banks. Easily accessible with public transportation. There's also south of Market (SOMA) that tends to be more established as the leather/daddy type area where Dore Ally and Folsom are held. SF is truly a fun destination for anyone gay and the 'scene' isn't just 'flamboyant gay orgy' as some would think but actually, I think, tends to be favored as much or more by the average guy just looking to enjoy a cocktail and meet up with nice guys.

Never been south but do hope to check out Weho one day to experience it also.

The Castro annoys me now. I've been there plenty of times, and I just get really tired of it. I've spent a decent amount of time in WeHo as well, and it hasn't gotten to that point yet (which I'm hoping it won't since I'm moving to LA!).

Castro is it's BEST during events. But bars on POLK are kind of like a hidden secret of fun... Go to The Cafe if you want to get shot or stabbed by 22 year old latin or Filipino queen with over plucked eye brows or compete with dick envying lesbian for a place to take a piss or get cruised by a drunk drag queen who smell like Macy's celebrity perfume and meth residue.

Why would the Castro annoy you? It's a destination that has numerous places that tend to cater to specific 'likes' of gays. I would think this is what you'd want to find in a community. You find YOUR type of bar and then enjoy it.

Never been to the Cafe so can't really comment on that but never ran into these kind of issues in general. The Castro tends to be very safe and, although a large variety of people, just the usual drunks tend to be annoying late at night (unless you're joining them and are drunk too I guess). Polk Street seems so yesterday. I've been there. The Cinch is OK but I never feel like there's a lot there any longer.

You are kidding me! I've had two friends stabbed ( one guy stabbed from a random gang initiation and another randomly outside the Bar on Castro when it was The Bar because of a cat fight that reached epic proportions)... my friends never go out in Castro for Halloween which is infamous..and My last New years in Castro (2011) was notoriously violent with incidents outside of the Cafe which has a reputation for such. Especially the way they switch out bouncers. SF is just batshit crazy at times. Always a catfight on a saturday night. But The Cafe is where i have seen the most problems..

We all should remember the guy who killed another guy outside The Bar on Castro. He boot kicked him to death. Then Halloween shooting (i think 2009?) happened outside of the Cafe.

Yes, I know of those two incidences. Halloween is always notorious for problems since many people come just because it's a party environment and is NOT typical Castro so I think suggesting such is just wrong. As for the The Bar, there's a reason it's no longer there. Tell everyone about the numerous issues that plagued the Bar during it's very short life. Underage drinking and fighting regularly. I don't consider either of these incidences as typical for the Castro in general. Anytime you have drinking you run the risk of someone getting drunk and in a fight but I'm sure if I did some checking, I could come up with a half a dozen 'batshit crazy times' that have occurred Polk in the Tenderloin too.

I just don't think the Castro is nearly as bad you're trying to make it sound like.
