Stories like this challenge how and when hate crimes should be applied. I think?

    http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2012/07/03/12544874-satanist-couple-theft-of-vote-satan-sign-is-hate-crime?lite

A Colorado couple says they are the victims of a hate crime because someone stole a “VOTE SATAN” sign from their front porch, but police say the incident sounds more like simple theft.

Luigi and Angie Bellaviste describe themselves as Satanists who belong to the Church of Satan, an organization “dedicated to the acceptance of man’s true nature – that of a carnal beast.” They believe whoever cut down the fabric sign from the porch of their home in Mountain View, a suburb of Denver, was targeting them because of their religious beliefs.

“I feel like we’re being treated unfairly because it’s not a so-called mainstream religion,” Luigi Bellaviste told CBS4 in Denver.

You make it sound as if the authorities are saying it is a hate crime. They are not saying that at all. It is the couple that had their sign stolen saying that. The police are not treating it as a hate crime. Calm down, Mary.

Because he wanted to insinuate that there was something wrong with hate crimes legislation, but if anything this proves this opposite. Even though they may not always make the right decision, this shows cops are capable of making the distinction of what is and what is not a hate crime.

Riddler78 is fucking retarded. It's bad enough when gay men lick the assholes of the Conservatives, but he's gay AND Asian. I'm just sure they're welcoming him with open arms.

Being gay is not a choice. Being black or any other non-white rare is not a choice. Being female is not a choice.

But believing in Satan IS a choice (regardless of religious affiliation or lack thereof).

Therefore, attempting to dismantle Satanists is not a hate crime.

Why the hell didn't they just "practice" like most religious people do?

In my neighborhood, any sign that said, "Go Jesus" or "Go Episcopals", would
be required to be taken down... no such signs are allowed under the covenants.

I realize here the sign was snatched.... maybe it will be returned... altered...lol,
but then they could really claim a "hate crime"....

They believe in duality consciousness like most of humanity instead of unity consciousness.

If we can't protect the rights of others religious beliefs; how we to ensure we can ensure that our gay rights will be protected or even recognized? The knife cuts both ways.
However, they're playing the victim card on a sign? Makes me wonder how much of what they believe is based on the attention the get for believing it? But, I'm noone to judge, let the court throw this out of court. icon_wink.gificon_wink.gificon_wink.gif

Jack, I think these two things contradict each other:
"Yes, it challenges common sense. It was simple theft. Hate crimes laws are ridiculous. Law is law. Steal, go to jail - who cares why someone stole?

Maybe the person who stole the sign is a kleptomaniac. In that case, the person could counter that he is being singled out because of his mental disorder. "

I'm sorry for your age addled dementia and how it impedes on your ability to think logically but as others have pointed out, it should cut both ways. Perhaps one solution is that religion should be taken out as a protected class?

Personally I'm undecided whether or not hate crime legislation should exist - but given that it does, it should be applied equally. Why would the courts or the cops ignore the charge? Isn't this what has always happened to minority groups in the beginning prior to awareness?

This is a case that is in a way ridiculous for content but there are other cases that have cropped up in recent years that challenge the utility of hate crime legislation especially when other laws have been broken - not to mention the difficulty of showing intent.

I was using an absurdity to illustrate the original absurdity. My attitude, throw the klepto in jail, throw the anti-Satanist in jail, throw the couple in jail for filing a false hate crime report.

In fact, let's all throw each other in jail. JAIL IS A HUMAN RIGHT.

    LOL!

The interesting part is how none of you care, or see that it's a not crime on the basis that "they are Satanists." That's fine that you believe that, but no where in the First Amendment of the US, where freedom of religion is protected, does it say that you are protected under the law except if you believe in Satan.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Now personally do I agree with them? No I do no, however the law is the law.

I thought the couple would be proud of the perp's EVILDOING.

"Look Beezy! Somebody stole our sign! EVIL has visited our front porch! PRAISE SATAN!! Now let's leave our front door wide open while we go shoplifting."
