This could partly explain the link researchers have found between drinking diet soda and being overweight. In one study, people who drank two or more diet sodas a day had five times the increase in waist circumference over a 10-year period compared to people who didn't drink any diet soda. There are a few explanations for the findings. Maybe people drink more diet soda because they're trying to lose weight. Calorie-free sweetness may also confuse the brain into craving more sugar.

As for your gut, at this point it's not clear if one diet soda a day is less damaging to the gut flora than ten. "I will say from a personal perspective that I don't drink sodas--diet or regular--and I rarely eat processed foods, especially if they have high-fructose corn syrup listed on their label," Payne says. Your best bet is to consume products containing these sweeteners in moderation, and drink mostly water. For gut flora to thrive, eat a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.

"How does that happen? As bacteria in the gut process food, they give off byproducts called short-chain fatty acids. These can be beneficial and serve as energy in the body. But as the sweetener-adapted bacteria thrive and become more efficient at processing large amounts of high-fructose corn syrup, artificial sweeteners, and sugar alcohols, they also produce more and more short-chain fatty acids. (Not to imply that sugar is any better than artificial sweeteners.

In those high amounts, Payne says, short-chain fatty acids decrease satiety signals. "This signaling may cause disruptions in our feeling full and hence prevent us from stopping to eat when we should," Payne says.

As if overeating isn't enough, the short-chain fatty acids also promote inflammation in the lining of the gut. "

Soda is gross. I'll stick to seltzer if I'm going to drink something carbonated.

"whole grains"...except wheat. Making progress by keeping wheat to a minimum. But, it will be a challenge to give up my diet coke habit...its crisp and refreshing.

So if you believe in the whole moderation is key motto, if you were going to drink a soda, is it best just to drink the regular (non-aspartame) soda if you don't regularly consume sodas?

Those studies are correlational and inconclusive.

I've been drinking diet coke for years and it hasn't done shit to my weight. I think it's depends on what else you're consuming.

Ummm, that doesn't make a lot of sense. The point of artificial sweeteners is that they pack a lot of sweet in very few grams. Even the best adapted bacteria can't feast on aspartame because there just isn't enough of it to feast on.

Now, high-fructose corn syrup and sugar alcohols are a different story - but neither of those is in diet sodas.

Here is the way sweetners affect the body...When you consume these drinks containing sweetners..They tell the brain and stomach that it's getting..sugar / carbohydrates. The stomach in return preppares the blood stream for a carb upload..but it doesn't happen...The stomach then compensates by doing strange things..like making you hungry..even when it's loaded with food...and there is evidence that sweeteners manipulate fat distribution and storage..!!... healthiest is stevia !!..Also what you consume when you down a diet drink is critical... If i explain it in my true nerd voice..i'll lose people..icon_biggrin.gif

Been using Stevia for the past couple of years, but I'm having a hard time finding the pure green Stevia powder.

I only have coke when mixed with rum. icon_biggrin.gif Else, I avoid it all. Soda is just too damn sweet(!). I've not 'liked' the taste for many years now. Thank god my parents curbed such treats when we were kids.
