I am inspired to compose an opera. Not sure yet if it'll be in English or Italian. I like English's accessibility, but I love Italian's purity. Or even French maybe.

But...I need a story! I have this conception of having a serious theme, and I definitely want it to be LGBT-explicit. I'm inspired by the film noir themes of living in a morally ambiguous world, fatalistic in character, taking place in dark European cities late at night, filled with romantic passion fueled by ulterior motives and criminal activity. And the main character might be an antihero: the center of the story, but whose actions could be considered questionable. Yet amid that could be true love somewhere...There should be a mood of angst and apprehension, perhaps a reflection of past LGBT hardships, facing threats of violence or some kind of non-physical retaliation yet a message shines through that, no matter what, LGBT people will persevere and love will always be meaningful. Gang/riot violence I find to be an interesting crime topic, but I'm not sure where to go with that. Humor wise, there could be room for that, provided it is perhaps more intelligent or darker in taste (e.g. gallows humor or black humor). But in addition to being super muscular and hunky, I'm sure a bunch of you guys are super creative and would have a lot of fun making up a story. Hey, if you're feeling REALLY ambitious, write a whole libretto and I'll work with that. Or maybe you could team up with other RJ people and make a story together. But I must compose! I MUST! But I cannot compose programmatic music without a story first! icon_cool.gif

Has anyone written an opera based on "Maurice" by E.M. Forster? Or "Brokeback Mountain"?

Sorry if those are plebeian ideas, but they just popped into my head.
