I'm not sure how I feel about straight guys tossing this around as much as "that's gay" What is the point of "no homo"? no gay intention implied? meh, seems kind of pathetic. I'm not sure why i'm bothered when my friend says this when i'm around.

They're implying that being homosexual makes you a lesser person.

A guy once said to me, "You have really amazing eyes. No homo." So I said, "Wrong, I am a homo." He had no idea what to say after that.

It's a way to assert straightness - and by extension - masculinity. Blegh.

In the immortal words of Jadakiss: "Real men don't have to say 'no homo.'"

Yes, they do. I'm conflicted as to how to react when my straight friend says it, so casually. In a way it bothers me and feels homophobic to me. Should I just shrug it off and laugh about it?

Yes my boys on my waterpolo team say it all the time. They hug or compliement each other on something sexually ambigous and they Say "No Homo" making it OK. I laugh because they just dorky.

If its a friend you can educate them and let them know they need to stop saying that if you want to remain friends. If its a stranger then flip them off or just ignore them. When I was in college a guy changed my class desk top monitor wallpaper to "You are a Faggot". I never knew what guy did it. But if you know someone is saying this crap to your face, its best to call them out on their passive aggressive hate in defense.

i think as long as it is in joking way between friends is cool, but to use in a public place with mix crowd it may be inappropiate.... Im gay and i use the no homo all the time with friends an co-workers.. i actually got all this straight guys at work to start saying it... it was pretty entertaining... My straight friends were doing more gay things and just saying no homo. And the funny thing was that the "no homo" was made big at work by a homo... My best friend and I use to say "who are these queers?" to everyone... (friends) and when i went to a gay bar it was the only time i could not say it (ironic)

Offensive? It's not meant to be offensive. And plenty of gay-friendly people use the phrase. It's just meant to indicate that the speaker is not actually gay after saying or doing something "gay" like complimenting a fellow male friend's looks. I swear, some of you guys will get upset over any inconspicuous thing.

Nobody has said it to me, but if they did I'd definitely call them out on it. I've heard of the phrase before and found it bothersome.
