Help offered to LGBT victims of forced marriage

"Today the (UK) government issued a warning about the dangers of forced marriage, which often involves young people being taken out of the country on what they think are holidays, only to find themselves at risk. It’s a particular problem for LGBT people"

No, girls and boys from Asian families such as Indian, Pakistani of various faiths. They are being forced to marry the opposite sex in their home country because it has been arranged by their parents. If they don't comply then it will mean they disgrace their family and in extreme case's can lead to them being beaten some times to death in what is called a "Honour killing". This is a serious thing that happens in many western countries with immigrants who hold a deep faith and hold to the social beliefs they were brought up with, not a laughing matter or subject to make light of.

I can not imagine being forced into without my approval. I watched a movie on something like this a couple of years ago, I felt so sorry for the young girl involved.

its really weird, i often hear that it happens to indians a lot but to be honest not even my parents or aunts' or any of my friends' parents or aunts (the generation more likely to have been raised in another country-not the UK) went through anything like that and i know quite a few indians. and if there were cases like that happening and the person forced complained, fuck neutrinos the only thing that goes faster than light is gossip like that.

maybe its because most of the brit-indian people i know are from a specific region in india but stuff like arranged marriages (where the child is pressured in to saying yes to a particular person) i didnt think happened to my or the above generation of UK indians.

Why do they identify Ukrainians as a risk group? As far as I know, arranged marriages are not prominent in any Slavic nation, not even among ethnic minorities in those countries. They pretty much have the same marriage customs as Russians and other Slavs (i.e. they can choose whomever they want to marry), although granted we know Eastern Europe isn't LGBT-friendly!

I notice that the words "Islam" and "Muslim" are studiously avoided. icon_confused.gif

Probably because arranged marriages are definitely not limited to Islam. It's more of an economical and cultural practice than religious one. Arranged marriages are common among Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, Jews, and tribal religions in much of South Asia, the Middle East, and Northern Africa. However, you can bet that parents generally make sure their kids marry someone of the same religion.

Because it's not just about Muslims.
