The interesting thing about this is that whether they like it or not, gays will still be in their exclusive club as they always have been whether they like it or not, its just a fact of life, gays exist among every group. all they've done is created a 'don't ask, don't tell' situation.

I'd think the better gay position might be "don't bother". Why let young boys be exposed to religion-based indoctrination?

Why My Son Can't Be a Boy Scout

" (OK, to be honest, he's an extreme threat to peace and quiet, but what second grader isn't?)

But my son is considered a threat to the Boy Scouts of America. Why? Because he identifies as gay."

"So far the BSA's bigotry is only an issue for the adults in my son's life, not for him, but Bruce and I know that that is only a matter of time. Soon his friends will be Cub Scouts, and he may come to me and ask to join. Then Bruce and I will have the unpleasant task of sitting a little boy down and figuring out the least painful way of saying, "Baby, they don't want you." And my little boy will know firsthand what discrimination is. Boy Scouts, you will help him learn an important lesson. I hope you are proud of yourselves."

Navigators USA looks like it might be a good alternative. Hopefully they grow to more locations.

"Navigators USA—This alternative to traditional Scouting started in 2003 in East Harlem (New York City). They call themselves "a different kind of scouting organization", and have two program sections: Junior Navigators, age 7-10, with three levels (Mira, Vega, Polaris), and Senior Navigators age 11-18, with four levels (Shadow, Tracker, Pilot, Navigator). They camp, and attempt to address the problem sometimes called nature deficit disorder. Navigators is coed, non-religious, and inclusive. Like the Boy Scouts, they have a Navigator Motto ("Stay On Course"), Navigator Slogan ("The more you give, The more you get"), law (called Navigator Cardinal Points: "A Navigator is Truthful, Respectful, Inclusive, Generous, Patient, Dependable, Resourceful, And Cooperative"), and promise (called Moral Compass: "As a Navigator I promise to do my best To create a world free of prejudice and ignorance. To treat people of every race, creed, Lifestyle and ability with dignity and respect. To strengthen my body and improve My mind to reach my full potential. To protect our planet and Preserve our freedom.").

They have a colorful handbook for the Senior section, and plan shortly to have one for the Junior section. While developing their program, they have limited chapters beyond New York City to one each in Massachusetts, North Carolina, and Texas, but expect soon to start growing significantly."
