I guess I might as well toss out a few...

I support Beckstrand Cancer Foundation and Children's Lifesaving Foundation. Both of them truly help those in desperate need of help. I was once in need of help with cancer and the Beckstrand Cancer Foundation was one of very few organizations in the nation that would do a god darned thing. They also help children with cancer as well as adults. The Children's Lifesavings Foundation has been around for two decades and provide a number of programs for homeless children... Believe it or not they have helped over 4000 families build a new life.

I've found that refusing to support causes will eliminate the need for effects.

    It's hard to say.

I kick in a few bucks to alumni scholarship funds, and some for the band. But I think they spend more than that calling me up to ask for more icon_rolleyes.gif

The same goes for public radio.

Sometimes I kick in a few bucks to random starving artists on kickstarter.

I support the Point Foundation: http://www.pointfoundation.org/

The Point Foundation gives scholarships to gay and lesbian kids that have encountered significant obstacles, such as being thrown out of their homes for being gay/lesbian. An anonymous donor has funded all administrative costs, so every dollar you give goes to a scholarship. The kids are very impressive, in my opinion.

Likewise. I have 17 shirts, 4 pairs of high end leather shoes, almost 40 ties, 9 sweater vests, 3 button vests, 7 sweaters, 6 pairs of slacks, and 5 blazers that I've purchased from Goodwill and all of it was probably only $80 all together. I take advantage of the sales and specials they offer.

    LOL...you're just starting out......icon_wink.gif

Most recently, I've supported my local volunteer fire department. I need to do a lot more. It doesn't help that every time I think of supporting some charity, I find out that they have some anti-gay agenda or some other major political view. I just want to do something to help someone out, not be part of a crusade.

    • LASPCA - Louisiana Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. I used to volunteer there but due to my severe dog allergies I had to give it up. Now I just support them through donations. icon_sad.gif

    • ARTDOCS - Provides free healthcare for people who make their living as artists

    • NOAIDS - A non-profit organization that provides free testing/counseling to New Orleans

    • MAKE-A-WISH FOUNDATION - They make the wishes of terminally ill children
    come true

    • TOYS FOR TOTS - Provides toys for poor children during the holidays

    • IT'S A PITTIE - Non-profit for Pit Bull rescue and rehoming

    • CRCL (Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana) - Plus, I'm actually about to go help them plant cypress trees in the wetlands. Kind of excited about that. icon_smile.gif

There are several others but can't think of them all right now. I'm a big believer in supporting the causes you care about.

At Christmas and around my birthday, I send checks to the San Francisco AIDS Emergency Fund. They help people pay their rent, gas/electric bills, etc., when they can't work because of illness.
