Not to be a smart ass, but the whole point of Burning Man is that you can't explain it exactly. Every person is there for their own unique experience.

But with that in mind, here's a good place to start:

I took a class in marketing that used it as a case study of post modern consumerism.

It's a gathering of what seems to be dissillusioned 21st century people seeking to gain order by dismantling their social roles and expectations. They are over stimulated with messages from their peers, parents, educators, government, media and marketing to the point where the only discernible solution is to completely dismantle existence.

It's like a church except it doesn't have to have meaning, it's complete lack of meaning is the meaning

i have a lot of customers that buy their costumes for burning man at my stores. I have heard it is very hippy, drugs are avaliable, heavy drinking, and it is considered spiritual. I cant really explain cause i have heard from a number of people different things. Go and let me know!

I've heard of it from my friend that has gone and I've always wondered what exactly it is. I just know she took a mushrooms at the thing ... LOL.

I haven't gone but it's definitely a commitment. Tickets are $300! I wouldn't go alone, and would rather go with a "camp", people who've done it before.

Thanks guys... I had no idea that it was some Woodstock flashback. I was thinking that it was of a spiritual journey for personal growth.

Burning man is a good excuse to do a shit ton of drugs, that is about it.

Overall it is filled with Hippies who fail at society because they refuse to get jobs (i.e. help the evil selfish corporations) when in actuality all they want to do is sit around, smack talk businesses, smoke pot, and do nothing. The irony here is that by sitting around and smoking pot, they are really doing the most selfish thing they possibly could without contributing to society at all.

Actually living in the dessert for a week takes a lot of time, effort, and money. And each group that goes has to submit their idea to the burning man for approval before they can come. Everyone has to have a structure. I'm sure most of them have jobs, and are pretty successful. It's a giant festival, put on by it's participants.

That was a pretty stupid and completely uninformed statement directed at people that go here, the way you perceive them while you really know nothing. It has nothing to do with the event itself.

Actually I know many successful attorneys business owners and so forth who go to burning man. I also know many unsuccessful losers who go to burning man as well.

Its simply meant to be funny, and is a quote directly taken from South Park.

It's not a quote if you don't cite it, you become responsible.

It used to be hip. Now it's just a lot of pretentious people who love to go without bathing for a week.
    Skip it.
