Just made my way to SF for a few days. Anyone have some pointers on gay bars to hit up while I am here? There's so many that I am not sure where to start.

Not quite a gay bar, but the ambiance was great when I visited a friend and had a great time in his roomicon_biggrin.gif as well..Anyway, is the Clift Hotel at 495 Geary Street its their Redwood Bar Room...had great music, great ambiance, the drinks were great and there were drag queen dancers on stage when I went. It was packed one Friday night, but had a great time.

I've only been here a year, but I can give you a few tips on what's worth checking out if you let me know what kind of environment you're looking for (club scene, dive bar, cocktail bar, etc)

If all else fails, just walk around Castro. Lots of different types of clubs/bars in that area that should be popular on any given night.

definitely not clubby. somewhere between a dive bar and a sports bar. dancing is ok too just not into the whole club scene

What kind of crowd do you like? The scene varies a lot from bar to bar. I like 440 Castro (lots of sexy bearded guys) and Powerhouse (skews toward the fetish crowd) best, but your mileage may vary...

Hmm... You could check out some of the bars around Church and Market St.

    Blackbird
    Churchill
    Pilsner Inn

I can only really vouch for Blackbird (haven't been to the other 2). The crowd there is mixed (gay and straight) and generally full of young professionals in their 20's and 30's. More chill then the Castro clubs, and they have some pretty good drinks there.

I've heard that Pilsner Inn is a more divey/sports bar. So that may be what you're looking for.

At any rate, those 3 are all very close to each other, so you can check them all out in one night.

Good luck and have fun! Enjoy SF!

Blackbird is the only bar I enjoy in the Castro - that's where I'd go if I were you.

My favorite is the Midnight Sun - video bar in the Castro. If it's slow or you're alone and don't get a chance to meet anyone you can still enjoy the music videos.

SlickCalifornia did a nice job of making a list for you. If you want young and dancing, then Badlands and Toad Hall. If daddies are you thing then 440 or the Edge. The rest are sort of in between somewhere. Just stop in one and see who's there before you order and if you don't like the clientele, go to another.
