Why is it that some people value their politic ideology above the wellbeing of actual human beings?

This is not a Conservative/Liberal thing- there are people both on the right and the left who sacrifice individual rights to their politics.

I was talking to a cute kid this morning who, for reasons beyond my ken, decided to attack the charity that I volunteer for (why he thought this was a good conversational gambit I´m not sure). He has taken his conservative “state´s rights” logic and applied it on a global scale, seeing the attempt to end the criminalization of homosexuality as an example of liberal westerners imposing on the freedom of sovereign states. This means he was against attempts to end gay persecution and he´s gay.

How can one allow one´s political logic not only to damage the interests of people but to damage their own interests?

Do you think it´s tied to an individual´s identity being so strongly wedded to their politics that they can´t see the obvious, or is it lack of understanding or what?

    I´m genuinely bemused.

I would just state why you feel the way you do about a topic and allow a person to have an opinion.

Trying to take away someones right to have an opinion is likely going to be a nonstarter.

There are plenty examples of people in every aspect of life that think against there own interests. This is because we all have different frames of references.

Complete failure to engage with the issue. Can anyone do better?

My vote is that it´s tied to identity - people get so tribal about politics that they lose the ability to discern.
