Ryan Murphy's new NBC sitcom draws anti-gay protest

James HibberdAn anti-gay group is calling for a boycott of Ryan Murphy’s upcoming NBC comedy The New Normal.
One Million Moms, an ultra-conservative organization that previously criticized JC Penney for featuring a same-sex couple in a catalog, is now coming after the Glee co-creator’s new show. Murphy’s New Normal is about a gay male couple having their first child via a surrogate.
The group complained in a posting on its Web site: “NBC is using public airwaves to continue to subject families to the decay of morals and values, and the sanctity of marriage in attempting to redefine marriage. These things are harmful to our society, and this program is damaging to our culture.”
Continued the organization: “OMM is prepared to contact any and all sponsors of this program if it is aired. It is proven this strategy works! It was not too long ago that NBC announced The Playboy Club was canceled after only three episodes because of lack of advertisers! Millions of Americans strongly believe that marriage should be between one man and one woman. NBC’s The New Normal is attempting to desensitize America and our children. It is the opposite of how families are designed and created.”

because the rise of our power (as LGBT people) means a relative dip in their power. that terrifies them.

as a side note, the name of this show concerns me a bit. I don't really think it's that productive to "include" gay as "normal"... rather... bashing the idea of "normal" to bits seems to work better. ryan murphy gets a little in over his head sometimes I think.

The reason we are feared is because for generations the masses have been baraged with anti-gay propaganda, including the Bible. Most of the various religions and political parties who resort to scapegoating gays do so in order to unite their base around a defined enemy. It seems that most people need to fear the unknown in order to be controlled by those they place their false trust in.

Many people are about how the world is, as taught to them as kids and by their peers.... and most aren't flexible or want to change based on how they see the world. "Gay" anything is a relatively new concept. There lies the problem.

Often they're not threatened, they just disdain us for cultural and religious reasons. Like the old South, ignorance produced hate. When they ARE threatened by us, it's usually cause they're not secure in their masculinity themselves. The only group that genuinely fears us are guys who assume we want to rape them. (Ironically, these are usually the guys that aren't even good looking!)

Well sort of. Gay wasn't quite so unusual in Ancient times, just thought I'd point that out. Again, it seems the gaining popularity of [modern] religion turned it into a taboo.

    One million stupid hoes

I get so irritated when people talk about the "sanctity" of marriage. Straight couples have been taking a piss and a shit all over its "sanctity" for a long time. 5 years from now I wonder how many of these women will still be wives in the supposedly forever long bond of marriage. Drives me crazy icon_evil.gif

There really has been a decay of morals and religious based family values in our country and I think it's time to put a stop to it.

Men and women need to start acting like men and women and stop trying to be what they aren't.

Equal rights? I don't think so. God created Man in His image. Woman was created from man's rib and is subordinate to him - not equal. Women need to stop acting like they are men - voting, owning property, working outside the home, wearing pants, etc. - and return to the traditional role of wife and mother.

It's no wonder boys are growing up confused and turning gay. They're being raised by women acting like and men and men thinking it's ok. Why not just be with a man if women are going to pretend they are?

If you can't tell, that's a sarcastic argument.

Gays are becoming revolutionary in re-defining "family values"and the face of the "All American Family"..

If this was a show about gay singles finding their way in life..it wouldn't get that much flack...!

Remember when ABC's "Modern Family" came out..Political and religeous groups went nuts!..

It's a simple combative strategy.."Television Predicts The New Normal"..
These opposing groups know if the mainstream media can easily promote gay familys and their dynamics ..it's only a matter of time before it's accepted widely by the general population..

    i feel like i'm writing a thesis..I'm outta' here...

Seriously though, I think it's basically because everybody's insecure about sex, and as long as people think being gay is a choice, they'll be especially insecure about the certainty of their own sexuality. They think they have to guard their sexuality against certain external influences that can potentially change it. A straight guy doesn't become gay because he sees gay guys holding hands or marrying. If people would accept that you're born gay, they could chill out, and we could build a fairer and more inclusive society. Jus' sayin'.

In terms of religion, perhaps it is that some people believe that homosexuality is a sin because that is the way they interpret the bible (or the way that their pastor interprets it for them).
However, I don't think they see this belief as merely an interpretation, they see it as an infallible truth (it is called the gospel after all).

So, when something comes along and challenges that truth (such as evolution, or that being gay is not sinful) then they are faced with having to deal with the reality that maybe their beliefs are wrong, and if this one aspect of your faith is wrong, then what else could be?

If you had a world view that you felt defined you as a person, and then suddenly it was undermined then you are not going to take it very well, people generally have an adverse reaction to existential crises (at least initially).

I think this is the most precise answer. Sex is the most personal interaction you can have with someone. For the religious, since Adam and Eve, sex has been viewed as sinful. Combine the two and you have the most sensitive subject matter and when something is viewed as different, it makes people extremely uncomfortable.

Ironically, religion also teaches, or supposedly teaches, tolerance, openness, and acceptance. The contradictions are clear.
