Too Bad I Can't Donate Blood Because I *Bleep* Men . . .

I just saw a commercial asking NYCer's to donate blood to avoid a blood shortage this year.... but given the millions of gay guys and men that have sex with me that cant give blood because they *beep* guys - its kinda sad. I hate getting blood sucked out of me but I would do it just to help others, as I know one day I could possibly need it.

You know what's kinda interesting, for the people that are not out and are asked "Why can't you give blood?" I wonder what they tell others. I don't think that's the best time to come out... Imagine if you will: "Well mom, I cant give you my blood because I loves the cock."

While I understand the risks involved... it's just one of those - ::sigh:: I'm gay moments lol.

PS: My school had a raffle for a set of tickets to a baseball game... and the only people that got to enter the raffle were people that gave in blood - but of course I couldn't do it - BLAH!!!

PSS: Just thought the bleeps would be more fun than saying "Men who have sex with men" lol

There's a laundry list of things that can disqualify you from giving blood. Just tell them you did Heroin and shared a needle.

I know what you mean. I used to regularly give blood as the blood drives came around and now I just want to be removed from the mailing lists. Thankfully no one particularly cares why I skip out on these things but if someone asked, even though I'm not out, I'd be tempted to tell the truth. A little depressing, but I get why they don't allow it.

As for your raffles, they should enter you in the raffle for *attempting* to give blood. Like I said before, there's a number of reasons people cannot or should not give blood during a particular drive. If they have any sense to them, they would enter those who tried as well as those who actually donated.

Yeah I think doing Heroin and sharing a needle is worse than having sex with a guy - but that's just me lol.

The issue is too many men (not to mention gay men) have never been tested for HIV and/or don't seem to be getting tested.

It may be a rule that should be revisted here, 20 years later... but then again, there seems to be a significant rise in unprotected sex amoung gay men.

It just eliminates the highest risk factor, though I doubt it's a full proof measure by any means.

I know what you mean. I can't give blood either but it's based soley off of when and where I was born which totally sucks because I'm willing to give my blood to help those who need it and they won't even take it.

I didn't know you can't give blood if you are gay. No one has ever asked me if I fuck guys.

My issue with the blood donation rule is primarily that it's not an appropriately-evenly-distributed ban.

Have sex even once with a man since 1977, and you're banned.

Have unprotected sex with an HIV-positive female prostitute, and you can donate blood again 12 months later.

If they were merely paranoid about the blood supply and issued either strict bans across risk groups, or scaled the length of prohibition to the probability of infection, that would be fine. They're in the business of saving lives, and thus they get to be paranoid about risking the spread of HIV. But their paranoia should be focused along scientifically-reasonable lines.

It really pisses me off that the gay men exclusion is still being done...
ESPECIALLY when HIV can be so readily screened

So when ever I'm accosted at the movies or on the street by the lollipops and orange juice people
    The Nurses hawking for blood
    I tell them....Sure....
    I'll donate blood for you
and I have a fairly rare type too
and when I tell them that they get very excited

so I go in the Bus and wave to all the people who are bleeding away on the gurneys

    Then I nonchalantly ask them
"Are you people still discriminating against gay men?"

To which they always answer... What?

    and I say...
are you still excluding gay men from donating blood?

    They always hem and haw
because there is really no correct way to answer that question

I always depart the bus by telling them and everyone else in ear shot

"You mean to say... if I DIDN'T say anything you wouldn't have done anything would you?"

Just Homophobia more HIV infection in Minority communities but you do not see the American Red Cross barring minorities. I have been banned from giving due to excessive Iron ,and too many Platlets. My doc called my blood the Goop for it is so thick.

Ban should be repealled, especially with the testing. One postive aspect is if you give and it come back that you are Postive could stop advancement of the Virus.

Yes but if you were a dyke, you could still give blood. But then they are not able to fuck, thus not able to have sex, as we can.

Also the reason it was never illegal down here to be a dyke, but it was to be a homosexual.

ok if you want to know what the FDA says on this subject, copy and paste this into your browser. This should answer your questions. Remember that the FDA is tasked with overseeing all biologics donations in the US.

I gave blood once when I was in HS before I was out and done anything with anyone.

Now I, like others, feel kinda bad that I can't donate blood. I don't want to lie and deny who I am.

Just last week when I was leaving the gym, there was a blood bus parked outside. I just had to say I'm sorry not today. icon_sad.gif

Not unless the laws have changed in the last year. because I called em about a year ago, to see if the rules have changed. One was told. if you are homosexual, you have had sex with another male, you can not give blood. I started but it's a long time since i has sexual penetration of any kind. it was still NO. I stated I have str8 mates whom have sex more than I, and with diffrent people. But thats OK.

ok was just wondering, maybe I miss red the australian red cross's stance on it.

this is directly from the Australian red cross's website.

"Sexual activity - Is there any kind of sexual activity that will affect my ability to donate blood?
If you have any reason to believe you may have acquired an infection through unprotected sex, you should not donate.
Safe sex practices are vital to the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. However, 'protected sex' is not 100% effective and therefore the Australian Red Cross Blood Service's guidelines relating to sexual activity are based on the prevalence of infection in certain population groups.
The following questions are asked in regard to sexual activity:
Have you ever thought you could be infected with HIV or have AIDS?
In the last 12 months have you engaged in sexual activity with someone who you think might answer yes to any of the questions on the use of drugs, partner with HIV, hepatitis B, hepatitis C or HTLV, or treatment with clotting factors?
Since your last donation or in the last 12 months have you had sexual activity with a new partner who currently lives or has previously lived overseas?
Within the past twelve months have you:
    Had male to male sex?
Had sexual activity with a male who you think might be bisexual?
Been a male or female sex worker (e.g. received payment for sex in money, gifts or drugs?)
Engaged in sex with a male or female sex worker?
If the answer is 'yes' to any of the above questions, then a 12 month deferral is applied."
