I'm not sure if anyone has read or posted this yet, but I found it encouraging to read of the selflessness displayed by some of those killed at the movie.

They showed Holmes on television just a little while ago. His hair was died much like the Joker in Batman. I think this was a psychological issue. Maybe he was upset there was no Joker in the new movie; I don't know, I haven't seen it. But it is clear the guy was trying to pose as a character in the movie.

Edit: BTW, that story is very sad about the boyfriends... Completely heartwrenching.

Edit again: The news just confirmed that he calls himself the Joker. The guy is Schizophrenic. He won't get the death penalty.

The court will determine that. If it is the case he will be sent to a mental hospital.

The fact that he has been very calculated about all of this, including carefully rigging his apartment to basically be a big bomb, tells me different. He knew what he was doing. He knew the consequences. He dressed in a way to protect himself during his rampage. The world will protest loudly if he does not get the death penalty.

I so agree man! The book War by Sebastian Junger about the Afghanistan war made me cry so many times. The movie version did too because this stuff is a reality. People are amazing if you give them half a chance to prove themselves. I sense it in people who probably don't know they have it in themselves. This proves it. So sad what the good people had to go through. Schizophrenia does not excuse this although as someone who is Schizophrenic, I can relate to the thought process that leads to this kind of act. His family should have got him help because obviously there were signs of this behavior in the midst.

I'm not saying his behavior is excusable, but as someone who has gone on some very long Schizophrenic journeys myself, I believe his family had to have known what was happening. He could have got help. We are responsible for our actions, I'm just suggesting that some things you can not pinpoint as easily as through immediate judgement. A psychiatrist would have known this.

I wrote a paper on it for English. Yes, it is very deep. We are amongst true brothers in this world.

I think if i was the public defenders office i would have personally gone over to the jail and cut his hair and dyed it back to normal, before the TV cams got access.......but then again maybe the crazy/insane appearance is part of their defense plan.

ya think? really? i'd say he looked heavily medicated for his court appearance.

i dunno, it's the wild west, people there like an eye for an eye. mental defect or not.

i'm waiting for some of the chicks he hooked up with off the sex site to come forward and sell their stories.....that should be interesting.

Now that you mentioned it, he did look medicated. But that is not the type of medication to treat Schizophrenia. I take Zyprexa which does not sedate you. Sedation is not the answer. He obviously needed help a lot sooner than this.

I dont think he's mentally disturbed. He's been planning this shit for months....ordered ammunition and guns months ago....bought weapons over months...

are u telling me that throughout the months it took him to plan it that he didn't "come to" once and realize what he's doing is wrong?! that over the past 6 months he didn't have ONE moment of clarity or "sanity" and realize how fucked up his plan is??

NO.... he deserves to die. He showed no mercy on a theatre full of innocent people, why should we show him mercy?

shave his fucking hair off, strap him to the chair, and fry the fuck out of that piece of shit.

Actually I am suggesting exactly what you write about having clarity. I also know that during those openings of clarity, a Psychiatrist could have kept him there, that's what they do. He obviously went down a long road of psychosis and sometimes even during those points of clarity, there's no foundation within yourself (such as reason) to keep you there. It could be he didn't want to be made a fool of... Yes, it could be for many legitimate reasons that he did what he did. The idea of Pschizophrenia however, may have never crossed his mind... That is what I am claiming.

he might have already been on some kind of medication, they reported he was disappointed he couldn't find a decent job even though he was a top rated honors grad in his field, and had been working at macdonalds.

if he was on meds for depression or other mood disorder, could be part of their defense, the drugs made him lose his grip on reality. I don't really know what else they could use. i mean at this point it would be a relief to find out he was totally high on meth when he did it, though i guess he'd have to be high for 4-6 months to explain all the planning/shopping for weaponry etc.

having a dad who's an attorney i always like a theoretical challenge to figure out the puzzle of defending a person like this.....i have to say i think this dude is fukd. he should have just used one of those glocks on himself in the parking lot.

I don't support in any way what he did and I do believe he should be held accountable. This should be a lesson to the world though about the intricate clues of what someone who is psychologically impaired is capable of. I don't know where he went wrong prior, I don't know him. I do know that I almost killed myself slamming into a telephone pole going 70mph because I was psychologically confused. This really did happen in 2008. Now I take better responsibility for my thoughts and believe me, it is hard as fuck! I love people though, I always have. I can think I would never hurt anyone, but who knows, I might. If others didn't pull together (including law enforcement), I would have went back and finished the job.

ya i think that most people who insist he isn't suffering from a mental issue because he knew exactly what he was doing when he planned all this don't understand how mental illness works.

people can be completely high functioning and totally rational, while at the same time have mental disorders that drive them to do acts no one would consider sane.

i would say, by definition shooting up a movie theater (without a revenge or self defense motive) requires some defect.

I guess what I'm trying to say is I personally could not judge this as death penalty, that is for the families to decide in my belief. I cannot take the job of God like that. This whole thing is just miserable! It is unfair and whether or not he gets the death penalty it will STILL be unfair.

+1 on this part (not the death penalty part that I deleted)

He's not mentally ill. He's a selfish asshole that has no regard for human life and probably wanted attention and fame so he went into a theater and killed a bunch of people. That's probably the entire extent of his motivation.

I count four, including the Navy man originally from Illinois? Or am I just confusing folks whose names look similar.

They are heroes whose sacrifie willing sacrifice will outlast the perversity of James Holmes

My instinct tells me that there's nothing between your ears yet you are a little bit obsessed with this topic. Some mentally disturbed people do plan these things out.
