What's up with the jock strap?

    QUOTE Aug 13, 2007 9:55 PM GMT
    Can someone please explain this to me because my friends and I can't figure it out. Guys that wear jock straps at the gym. Why?

    I'd understand the need for support if they were freeballers or boxer wearers, but I see these guys changing from briefs to the jock strap in the gym.

    It can't be range of motion because I've never at the gym thought "Man, I can't do this exercise. My underwear is too binding." I've tried them on and have never had a felt an increase in range of motion."

    Who invented this thing and how did they come to decide that cloth covering the whole ass was inadequate fitness attire and two straps under the ass cheek was the way to go?

    My friends and I think that it's either a generational thing.

    Discuss.

    Except for your gym shorts getting wedged in your ass after squats. Been there.

    *sighs and rolls eyes*
    So they can get naked in public, not once but twice;
    to seem more 'athletic' and 'sexy' than they actually believe themselves to be;
    and to fuel someone's fantasies (perhaps he was aiming for you?).

    Obvious, non?

    Oh you kids today. Well, here's the deal...basically, to me, a jockstrap is the best thing to wear under my workout clothing. When you do athletics, (or help a buddy moving furniture) you need support from something breathable. Especially if you have low hangers like I do (i'm being frank) you need support.

    Support is not bunchy cotton briefs with a fly front and piping around the legs, boxer briefs are worse, and boxers offer no support. I wear boxers 24/7 except when I'm at the gym. When I was dancing, I used to wear what is called a dance belt, which was one strap right down (or up) the middle. Yup right up the ass. BUT...it afforded much needed support, and it was a minimal article of clothing--exactly what jockstraps are used for, and therefore faces no danger of extinction. Why don't you and your friends go get jockstraps? Don't mock it, don't go EW I don't understand, just experience something manly, and see if it benefits you. Maybe you'll be surprised, maybe it'll do nothing for you, but the best way to answer your question is to find out for reals. They only cost $3.99 at a sporting goods store. Eventually, you'd learn the advantages.

    Now, someday, when you're a little older, I'll explain the fetish portion of jockstraps to you.

    I don't totally get it either. I could understand if you were also wearing a cup, i.e, when playing football or soccer and needing extra protection.

    I've seen a few guys over the years who probably are working out hard enough to need a jock... But most of the guys I've noticed wearing jock straps at the gym... well, I'm pretty sure it's a style thing for them, and not really about support.

    I "get" jock straps. They're basically a locker room fetish.

    What I don't get is thongs.

    Who would want to walk around after a heavy bout of cardio, sweating like crazy in soggy wet underwear. Jocks breathe and allow sweat to dry faster. It's a comfort thing for me but who doesn't like a hot guy in a jock strap? : )

    Err... that's what I meant.

    "What I don't get is thongs."

    They ONLY makes sense when wearing white trousers or shorts...
    so long as the 'thong' matches one's skin tone as much as possible, Please. Who wears them for comfort?

    Hmm, but isn't the point of wearing the thong under those white pants to be a subtle or not so subtle tease?

    I was tempted to agree and say that I don't get it either, but Shortnsexystud makes a good point. My underwear does tend to get pretty soaked, especially so after an intense cardio workout. A jockstrap would still get soaked in the front, but at least there'd be less sweaty underwear to deal with.

    I don't own nor have I ever owned a jockstrap. The underwear I buy gives me great support. But that point actually makes me consider picking one up.

    Shortnsexystud nailed it.

    And TOFUSTUD I totally agree with you as well - I too NEED the support.

    Who wants to go to the office, or even out for the evening in sweaty, soaking wet underwear after a hard workout.

    Now if they would only make different size pouches.

    Hmm... I think we were required to buy them.
    Athletic supporter, 2 each
    In about fifth grade.

    A LOT of guys wore them as their only underwear, during the disco daze. Especially with those tight bun-hugging pants.

    I thought they were kind of itchy and cumbersome. Eventually, I found some low-rise nylon ones that were more comfortable. The only place I know to get them now is the 'road runner sports' catalog. Unfortunately, that's one of the worst spam- and junk-mail-generators around. Now, I mostly wear jocks for bicycling, as most of my gym shorts have support liners sewn into them.

    This year, during pride weekend, I saw a couple of bold young guys walking around downtown PDX wearing ONLY a jock strap. Maybe it worked for them. I'm not sure I'd want to use the same barstool, after they were sitting on it...

    ---> "Now if they would only make different size pouches."

    I've seen some ads for briefs with different pouch sizes, but not jocks. I haven't tried it yet myself. I HAVE tried ordering "sexy underwear" from some of "those" catalogs, and concluded that either a) those sexy models have VERY small equipment or b) they look so serious because they're in a LOT of pain, during the shoot.

    Aesthetically, I really don't like jock straps, but they're certainly practical. I tend to favour briefs myself, but I always change my underwear after my workout anywyay, so I'm not wandering around in sweat-drenched scanties.

    We wear jocks because:
    * they're comfortable and supportive,
    * they let everything "breathe",
    * they look *good*
    and, yeah
    * they have fetish associations ;)

    Must admit, I never got the trunks or Boxers thing myself - trunks are always too tight and hot, and make me feel like i'm squashing my package into clingwrap (don't get me wrong, i *have* done that before, but not to work ;) ); Boxers are way too loose, bunch and rub in all the wrong places, and look crap under tight jeans...

    So, i wear a jock everyday - a sports one at the gym or when running, and a great one from next2nothing during the day (N2N stuff is *amazing* - support like nothing you've ever felt: like a wonderbra fer yer tackle ;) http://www.n2nbodywear.com/).

    Trust me - *nothing* is sexier.

    I wear boxer briefs because I like my junk to be supported throughout the day. When I'm at the gym, I have to have extra support so they don't get trapped between my legs... lmao... just being honest. They hang low, I was born that way.
    I hate jock straps because of the straps, so I wear a strapless jock (sock-jock). It slips around the waist and then you pull the fabric down and under which cups everything.
    Can't go to the gym without it. Check the provided link.
