President’s Attack On Success Shows U.S. Falling, Not Rising

    http://news.investors.com/article/619339/201207241827/president-obama-moves-america-toward-fall.htm

In a speech on July 13 in Roanoke, Va., President Obama said this about successful people:

“You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hard-working people out there. … If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help.”

Why limit the discussion to the United States?

Everywhere on our planet, there are smart and hard-working people striving for success and a decent life. Like in the United States, every country has people building roads and using these roads to get to places of work; some people are good teachers, some are good farmers, etc. Most human societies have the same general components.

I am sure Barack Obama saw plenty of smart and hard-working people in Indonesia, where he lived as a child. Why is Indonesia, a country very rich in natural resources, poor?

My husband, our friends and I worked hard in the USSR. Fresh from college, full of enthusiasm, we were in our prime years.

Soviet communists had created a system according to teachings by Karl Marx. This system was based on the principles of equality: Rich exploiters (private business owners) didn’t have a place in this “workers’ paradise.” Therefore, entrepreneurs were outlawed.

There were many talented inventors in the Soviet Union. To register their invention and obtain a patent, they had to include names of official communist leaders as co-creators, putting their names above their own. If government leaders could not comprehend the idea or its relevance to the future, the invention died.

The same applied to works of art. In this “just society,” people were whipped into conformity. Smart or not smart, all were equally poor.

Government central planners in the USSR, or China, or Cuba, didn’t invent modern technology, and Soviet-made computers of the late 1970s were imitations of IBM’s, created from stolen blueprints.

You're making an erroneous leap with that comparrison.

I believe it's you who has mentioned Ayn Rand countless times to support your opinions. Sorry to break it to you (again), but your "Atlas Shrugged" idealogy is delusional and dangerous--not to mention woefully dated. It really doesn't apply to what the president said in his statements. There's room in society for everyone: the movers, the shakers, the hard workers, and, yes, even those who can't take care of themselves and need help from others. The government is an umbrella for everyone, not just the elite, though the elite certainly are better protected than anyone else, both in law and tradition.

This isn't Soviet Russia, no matter what you paint it out to be. (Even Soviet Russia is no longer what you seem to think it is.) To be honest, people like you are so far on the fringes that it's hard to make sense of your statements. I'm certain, though, that your "selfish" philosophy doesn't belong anywhere in the real world. If it were to be, then, oh, what an abysmal world we would live in.

If you were to go into restaurants in both East and West Berlin, pre-unification, the differences between the quality of food and service were stark.

I also had the opportunity to meet former East Germans who in their early 20s risked long prison sentences if caught, but they escaped to West Berlin for the opportunity to participate in the same type of system that Obama mocks and denigrates.

Excuse me !!!! When did Obama attack success ?

There was no such attack and Romney's efforts to twist his statements into an attack on success falls flat on the average American, so I'd give this up,

The context of that speech was worse than the one cherry picked quote which is part of the irony.

Republicnuts love to pick words out of a speech, and then make up a new speech, and then say that Obama said what they made up, it's kind of funny, except that the nuts on the republican side believe it.
Recently the president said something about how no one starts a business by themselves, that they basically rely on roads and educated workers, buildings, etc on building a business. Common sense stuff. But the crazies took this to mean, "no one starts a business except big government."
    Idiots believe this shit.
This is why we should not let republicans vote. They are obviously just too stupid to be allowed to vote at all anymore.

Sorry, it was hardly taken out of context. The context was even worse than what some claim were cherry picked. That's why this message is sticking.

It's sticking with the lunatic fringe. I see that IBD has lost any standard of journalistic integrity given their crude use of the ellipsis to remove the context of the remark.

If the context is more damning, why is it being hidden so judiciously?

It is good to know what the incumbent really thinks about the free enterprise system and entrapaneurs. A lapse led to a rare moment of candor where the real Obama was there for all to see. This will haunt him.

Oh, you're quoting ONE PERSON'S PERSONAL OPINION PIECE.

That doesn't make it a fact.

Besides, you're beating a dead horse.

Every radical right wing nut job has already taken out of context, what the President said, and attempted to spin it to mean something entirely the opposite of what he actually said.

And, that makes you a liar.

    Fool.

Can the conservatives come up with one successful American who received no help from anyone else?
If not, it's time to drop this transparently phony whine-fest about how mean Obama is for making you to pay your taxes.

The Saggy, Unfit Minds on the Right have so convinced themselves of President Obama's grand conspiracy against our country(HIS COUNTRY TOO...AND THE COUNTRY OF HIS CHILDREN)........they can no longer hear anything other than the poison running through their minds.

AGREED.....they are too stupid to vote.

Fortunately, the saggy and unfit old codgers will probably cause themselves to explode before this election takes place.

    Thank God.......and GOD BLESS AMERICA.

Common sense should tell even a radical right wing Republican suck ass, such as yourself, that no President would attack success.

This bull shit is right up there with the flag lapel pin flap.

Just to highlight since it's obvious that liberals, who seem to be seething with envy, just don't get, it's difficult for them to explain sentences like this:

I might add that Indonesia has a similar governmental system to ours.
They might be poor since there no foreign investors involved in the countries economic system.
Plus they have a mixed economy.
So im not sure what you are getting at.

Not really - Indonesia as far as natural resources is very rich in them - but you have to ask yourself what are the reasons they are poor? Why don't they have foreign investors? The US also has a mixed economy - with an even larger government concentration today than before.

While a government can create the environment for business, it's up to entrepreneurs who take the initiative to create. When businesses succeed in places like Indonesia it is often in spite of government - just as it is in the US - it's just that US has done a better job at avoiding interference in managing businesses. But that is changing.

A good starting point to why Indonesia is poor is here:
    http://www.doingbusiness.org/data/exploreeconomies/indonesia

To say however that businesses and entrepreneurs "owe" something despite the fact they pay higher taxes and much of that support is again more of an attempt at making a bogus excuse as to either the failure of others or to tax more.
