GOP Complains About Active Duty Troops in San Diego Pride Paqrade

Congressional Republicans challenged Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Tuesday to explain why the Defense Department allowed active-duty troops to wear their uniforms while marching in San Diego's gay pride parade last weekend. In a letter to Panetta, Sen. Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma said department rules bar service members from participating in political activities while in uniform and pressed Panetta on why a waiver was granted, who requested it and why it was considered over others. Inhofe, who serves on the Armed Services Committee, also pointed out that administrative action has been taken against service members who have violated the rule. "If the Navy can punish a chaplain for participating in a pro-life event or a Marine participating in a political rally, it stands to reason that the Defense Department should maintain the same standard and preclude service members in uniform from marching in a gay pride parade," Inhofe wrote. In a statement accompanying the letter, Inhofe said he was concerned that the Obama administration "continues to force its liberal social agenda on the military by promoting the homosexual agenda, mandating the use of high-cost green energy initiatives, pursuing abortion rights and suppressing the free exercise of religious liberties."

(Pardon me if this is a duplicate posting of the topic - I didn't find it elsewhere)

Seems it's a legitimate display of an official position now in the DoD (i.e., DADT is dead, open service is allowed) to me. Also "political"? This is a celebration of identity parade for a legal group of people in this country...not a protest (like the chaplain against abortion- which is a legal procedure in the USA), not a political campaign event. There may be a politician or two joining in for the publicity, as they always do, but that's not the purpose of the parade.

This was a lone official exception made by the DoD to permit some military service members to march in uniform.

Do you see parades like this as political or celebrations of identity (like the Irish on St. Patricks Day; Memorial Day, Veteran's Day, Christmas parades, etc.?

Update: Here's San Diego Gay Pride's reply to the GOP criticism:

"To whom it may concern: The promise of America, grounded in the Constitution, contained in our Pledge of Allegiance, inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, and enunciated by generations of our nation’s leaders, is that America stands for liberty, for justice, for equality for all. This has been America’s Pride. To honor all service members without regard to their sexual orientation is commendable, to pursue the United States’ value of equality is honorable, and to support those actions is genuinely American.

"The mission statement of San Diego LGBT Pride is fostering pride in and respect for all lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, locally, nationally, and globally. It is with great pride and distinction we pursue that mission, and we were honored to do so last Saturday at San Diego's Pride themed 'America's Pride.' We fully support, agree with, and respect the decision by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and hope that this is just another step on the road to equality." - San Diego LGBT Pride executive director Dwayne Crenshaw, via press release.

Beautifully said, in my opinion! Stick that up your tight bungholes, GOP

These pathetic turds just cannot get over losing the DADT repeal vote. If it was a bunch of service members, in uniform, marching in a church parade, they would be praising them from the rooftops.
